well "other" still seems to be in the percentage, its just that this poll has none voting "other" :)

I'm not opposed to "other," it is like a write-in candidate. However, not all "other" votes are alike and would have to be hand-counted to correctly determine their meaning.

And yes Talk, sometimes it seems like people are just trying to screw up the numbers by abstaining when it was included in the percentage. It was like a very passive-agressive way to oppose the author without actually taking a stand. However, Nerwane did point out that people might not want to vote if votes are public, so some might have clicked abstain just to see the results, without voting themselves.

that's very true placio, but after seeing the votes they could also click "remove my vote" and it would be removed to prevent impact, but this fix we've gotten is perfect and negates the need to do as i suggested (votes are not locked in until 5 minutes after the vote is cast, so a voter always has the chance to change their mind, at least for a few minutes)

and i agree that other is valid, but would have to be addressed on each of the reasons for the "other".

Other games - they give you a cookie whether you succeed or not, in fact you don't even have to participate. Ryzom takes your cookie, eats it in front of you, and slaps you 2 or 3 times for bringing a cookie in the first place.

If Abstain is removed then I respectfull request that "None of the Above" be added as a *mandatory* button and be counted in the statistics. I suspect that most Abstain votes actually corresponded to None of the Above.

P.S. I also note that Abstain is winning this poll. *evil grin*

Not in my point of view. To me "Other" is a positive response usually followed by a post in the thread explaining what "other" is desired or more often criticising the phrasing of the question. "None of the above" is a negative response, simply saying that none of the options presented are acceptable to the voter.

That's how I see it . YMMV

Also now that abstain is no longer an option in the polls % I can't see how this makes them more accurate because they no longer reflect the number of people that actually read the post and chose not to vote rather than people who have not read the post at all.

I think not to calculate abstention in the % is a shame. At the moment the % are :

28% yes, 28% no and 43% abstain (the 1% difference is from round up)

Most of the people don't care of the result, and we cannot see this in the result.

And I would like to see how many people read the poll and didn't answer. I guess 28 answer is a little minority from people who read the poll.

Well there are 68 posts in this thread and 1480 views. That comes to 21 people per post Since some of those views would have come after a number of posts were made, that number of individual viewers is probably low. How low we can't say, but clearly there are at least a few who haven't voted.

Regardless of how many choose to abstain, the act of abstaining is not voting. The voting percent should be representative of those that actually expressed an opinion.

I think it was suggested in another post to count the number of persons (not visits) to the thread, but that seems rather intrusive and still irrelevant... If you dont express an opinion, your vote doesn't count. So at this point a high number of visits only indicates how long the thread has been posted for.

Finally, "Other" absolutely is the same as "none of the above," because anything other than what the author stated is obviously none of the above... It is not positive or negative necessarily, simply not an option offered by the poll author. If you want to vote negative, choose no!

Many posts do not offer simple Y/N choices. Many are badly written.

This is not a democracy. Polls are there to help the devs (and other active writers/coders/etc.) have an idea what people want. Votes in a poll carry no official weight and should carry no weight at all unless they represent a significant fraction of the player population, hence the desirability of Abstain, Other and None of the Above and having them be part of the percentages.

None of the Above is a vote that says "The choices are all distasteful to me and I can't think of a good one." Other is a choice that implies that there is a potential choice that the votor thinks is a good one. (It is also usually followed by a post in the thread.)

None of the polls actually carry very much weight by the number of participants, I'll look in older posts again, but how often do more than a couple dozen people participate?
