ok so first off read the very bottom of this link below to understand what i'm saying here if it's not already clear.

http://en.ryzomnomnom.com/wiki/Special_command

but i found that there used to be a command to manually save your character data right then.

/FLUSH (does not have to be caps but it's very easy to read that way.)

why this command was ever removed is totally beyond me, i see no logical reason to remove a way to do a manual save. this was a fine feature, and should be brought back, and because of the achievements for exploration this would be a blessing in not wasting play time waiting for a save in a location that may or may not be very dangerous to one's health in game.

a guildie brought up this could be used for DoS attacks on the server, so i offer this change idea:

the idea will be to decrease the time between saves, from the current 8 minutes to something like 2 up to 5 (2 would be 30 saves an hour, and 5 would be 12 saves an hour)

the reason i say this is it's really a pain when your treking to get the achievements and just prior to getting in an area, your toon is saved (i mean 10 seconds or less befor you enter the area) then your forced to stop playing for 8 more minutes to move on (if you working on the achievement points that is, and let's face it, there are some places we never or almost never go on the big tree, more less stand around in for any other reason then the achievements)

On one hand i understand that you are annoyed by the save game mechanism because it affects how the achievements work. I actually don't do area based achievements because of this. And without waiting i got an amazing 2 locations unlocked.

On the other hand there was a very good reason to remove that command. I'm not sure whether they fixed the issue that was exploited using manual save (it wasn't DoS).

There is a third way to get the achievements working properly and keep manual save disabled at the same time. There should be a menu option in achievements to update your current location. Could be integrated into the starting page of achievements so that you only need to open achievements to update them. After all it's only the player's location that needs a quick update, nothing else.

i'll go with the idea of a button we could click to update the location right then, that would negate the entire need for the /flush command, and would also negate the request to reduce time between saves. perhaps your comment will be noticed and something along those lines will be done, regardless of anything changed or added, i'd welcome a slightly faster way to trigger the achievement.

Is Ryzom different from other MMO's in the sense that the client buffers changes to your character and occasionally writes them to the server? If it is, it seems like it would be a good idea to let us save our character manually in addition to the auto-save feature.

#8 [en]

No, it's not like you said. And no, it won't be such a good idea to manually flush because of possible exploits.

ok, let's go with the idea to have a button that triggers the achievement without a total save, or perhaps something that will trigger the achievement as soon as you enter the zone in question.

I'd be in favour of a better way to trigger the achievements than having to sit and wait for a save. Agree that the flush command wouldn't be a good return. maybe something as simple as being in the zone for a (small) minimum time, e.g. 20 seconds.

You can't "complete" the mainland. If one thinks one has seen or done everything there, one is kidding oneself. But be prepared to "get out what you put in," because the mainland does not coddle or hold hands.

How about you have to go there and kill something.  That would prove that you are not on a sneak but are able to survive there.  Of course, it may take longer but it would weed out the tourists.

That would put those who are good sneakers at a disadvantage, also everyone who can't kill stuff in level 250 regions. Besides, the system even now allows for some luck. As TalkIRC can confirm, he once got an exploration achievement seconds prior to being mauled to death. Had he arrived just a bit later, he would have had to redo all the trekking and surviving.

tl;dr manual triggering of achievements would still be a good idea

The 8 minutes save time may annoy us, but it actually is a proof that you can stay there (and alive) that long. If you want the achievements, it's a one time effort - no big deal.
I would not waste anyone's development time on changing this.

If many people want this we might better get together and sponsor Sir Cotare to help change the source code for server side event driven achievements, instead of a script that regularly polls the character database. That would also allow other kinds of achievements, such as those reacting to missions.
