Allow replacement of materials used in crafting with better analogues.
If player has enough skill for that :)

It can also be used for repairs.

there is NO repair in ryzom, and the crafting system is uber complex to start with (one of the most complex in ANY game, only one or two games compare to ryzoms crafting system, the others are just way too simple and easy)

everything on atys is finite, nothing lasts forever here, just like IRL.

(not my favorite feature of the game, but i've come to understand it as i played, but like you when i was a new homin in silan i didn't always like that either, but i adapted to the unique world that is ryzom)

Other games - they give you a cookie whether you succeed or not, in fact you don't even have to participate. Ryzom takes your cookie, eats it in front of you, and slaps you 2 or 3 times for bringing a cookie in the first place.
