I just spent almost all afternoon playing this and i have to say i am very happy with this game so far...

i hesitate to say it, but it almost reminds me of why i loved SWG when that was first released...in fact much of it is very similar in the way it feels...i tried WoW many years ago when it was fairly new (we are talking the early 2000's) and i did not like it as much as i thought i would...and the PK's were getting way out of hand after a time, so i switched to SWG when it came out and i was very happy for a while, until they made it one huge jedi love fest...

believe me i was sad when it turned into a glowy stick free for all...but now i can say i enjoy a world similar to that and with very familiar controls, and i think its much improved from even that...its original, and its also very well designed...kudos to the devs for their hard work on this (i appreciate that since i have been a dev before and have built over 300 models for one game mod in particular, but i wont go into that any more here)

graphics wise, i think its a nice balance between very appealing textures, and simple models...since its a server based game, i dont expect it to be super high polygon, and it should not be...i think it makes for a larger community, especially since many are either on old machines and can play this game, or are on alternative OS's...like me

as far as the naysayers go, i actually enjoy this type of game play, grinding, crafting, and the balance one needs to keep in mind when leveling their character...quests are not as hard as some think they are, and i have not had a moment yet where i was confused about one...however i do think that there needs to be just one thing added, the ability to change the waypoint to the currently selected quest...but thats minor really, i have managed without it so far, and though it is slightly annoying, it has not stopped me from completing any quests...

anyway, im not sure how much time i will be on, but if anyone wants to try and hang out there, or grind along with me, im certainly not opposed to it...its a nice change of pace from the average game these days...

Welcome to the game Grimoire! Hope you come to stay, :) Being a sandbox game I'm sure the current Devs would not mind having your help or input since you were one before. XD no pressure actually, but if i knew programming, i would love to help out. I assume that means you know about programming. At any rate, nice to have your glowing review, have you even left Silan yet for the mainlands? A huge world is in store for you and a great community :D Come in and eat some cookies! :-)

well, im not very familiar with linux kernel, but the last time i programmed a game was in apple IIc basic language...i primarily focused on building models and someone else did coding and inserted them into the game using proprietary import tools, or fan made tools...

i have not left the Silan mainland, but even still i enjoy the game so far...im not sure what guild to join, and im kind of the sort of character that enjoys autonomy, but i dont object to working with others as long as im not bound to event participation as a prerequisite for being a part of a guild...im still trying to flesh out my character and figure out where they fit exactly...

You can change waypoints! Right-click your compass, click missions, pick the one you want. Requires the mission to have given you a waypoint though, not all of them do.

Welcome to the rootball, hope you'll enjoy your stay.

I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are COLONIZED by wankers. Can't even find a decent culture to be colonized BY. We're ruled by effete arseholes. It's a shite state of affairs to be in, Marceline, and ALL the fresh air in the world won't make any ****** difference"

welcome the game!
in my humble, uneducated opinion this is a brilliant game and judging by your response to it, i would say you're going to 'fit in' nicely.
the community here, although small, is fantastic and people will usually bend over backwards to help you out.

ignore the naysayers' views, they are simply points of view and should not reflect badly on the game. It's just not for some people.

have fun on the rootball!

marceline.

thanks marceline...im not sure if there are any in this game, but i kind of like ranged weapons, like bows...not really into explosives or guns, but bows are my thing...are there any in this game? and if so when do i begin to find them on the level lists? there are a few areas i would love to have them already...i know its probably something you have to work up to, but a basic bow at the start would not be a bad idea...nothing flashy, but just like basic magic casting...short range, but far enough away to keep from getting attacked en masse by rugors (whatever those wolf like creatures are) i went back there just for level up and harvesting after killing a bunch and the second time i got owned...not a big deal, the death penalty is a minor headache and its easy to get past by simply attacking a few easy creatures...

well there's no bow and arrows as such but there is bow rifles.. and the guns aren't really like generic guns - they're more organic. As for when you get them; you can have them straight away if you bypass the starting island of silan but i really don't recommend that unless you have a strong friendbase on the mainland.
I'm not really into guns myself either hence why my ranged skill is down at 21 at the point where your skill tree branches off :-P
i think those wolves you mention could be ragus' - and yes, they are a pain in the arse! But it's a great feeling , as you get your higher levels, to be able to whack them with one swipe of the sword. Though having said that, no matter what lvl your are, there always seems to be something else that will bite your backside off :-)
death penalty is a pain but it's a small price to pay in my opinion.. If you die though, always ask for a rez before respawning... you never know who is nearby that can give a hand.

yeah true about the rez, but its not really a huge issue...

i will just have to keep leveling up and make sure im ready to leave Silan...

#10 Report | Quote[en]

good plan :-)
i would say get either magic or fight (or both) above lvl30, that way you will have a chance at defending yourself against the nasties on the city borders.
i stayed on silan until i had melee at 40-ish, elemental around 30 and heal at around 30 too... those lvls worked well enough for me to do some welcomer missions and begin getting good xp again - something that will become scarce in silan at those lvls.

don't be in a hurry to leave.. friendships and allies can be formed on silan and will have time to work out how you like your game to pan out :-)

Welcome to Atys, hope you enjoy your time here.

I had several guild members who switched from SWG to Ryzom when they nerfed it, they all said the same thing about the similarities so you're not the only one. :o)

You can't "complete" the mainland. If one thinks one has seen or done everything there, one is kidding oneself. But be prepared to "get out what you put in," because the mainland does not coddle or hold hands.
