I would strongly suggest we start our own server, and perpetuate our programming efforts (like making underwater and prime roots areas playable) there--not to mention building a new character from scratch.

I would love to see this happen. I would gladly help dev and maintain this.
I have been waiting for someone to startup a game server based off the released opensource.

I don't want to laugh but... in the years since Ryzom was open sourced the Ryzom Core community has seen less than half a dozen players visit much less contribute major features like this. The best we have is some Planeshift refugees who have started their own steampunk-inspired MMO based on Ryzom Core. What they lack in programming they make up for in fantastic art.

You guys have all been welcome to come and do this since they day it was open sourced. You have been welcome to contribute for Ryzom via the open source community. But none have done so.

All ppl who are okay with wipe don't understand one thing, it's not about losing goodies or even levels or even stories all that can be rebuilt I believe - it's all about losing time. Any of u "let's wipe!" folks have 5 digging masters? several craft masters? u know how much time and effort it takes to get those? Yes I can easily see me run around as newbie and with my many years experience I will be very successful newbie u can bet :) I will do so on my free to play account, will socialize, help with little heals or sneaky treks or knowledge but I would never pay again to build a multi-master character and money is a key point here right? For the company at least =)

Multiple dig masters, multiple craft masters.....just finished bracelets what a click nightmare jewels are!....Crimson Executioner and Avatar of Destruction, and 200 heals. Do I want to lose that? No, but it is not the skill levels that make my life on Atys fun, they are just tools.

I am not pro-wipe nor am I pro-saving skills. I am pro-Ryzom.

Cyan gradually open-sourced portions of the game (or did they open all of it? I don't remember that detail) and once again ran their own server with the ongoing help of donations. Currently that official shard coexists with user-run shards.

At the time Ryzom Core was open sourced (in full, mind you) Cyan had only committed to releasing the client source code and at the time had promised to do so for something like a year but had yet to deliver. They finally delivered the client and tools an some scripting code. Still no 3D assets or server-side code.

Alternately, I would support something just proposed...moving all old characters to a community controlled "experimental server". I am not sure how this would work, WinchGate would have to get creative and create a new GPL variant, testing environments, and rollout system, and probably a community driven proposal, request, and voting system for features...who knows, they might even pave the way for a new system of community-driven game/software development. I could see prospective developers/artists subbing just for the right to get game programming experience and content for their portfolio. Or schools buying "group licences". And of course, WinchGate, as part of the new GPL, would reserve the right to implement anything they liked from the experimental server to the actually "live server". The "live server" would be this new empty server they are now proposing.

I know my last few replies have been harping about the Ryzom Core community. But I'll mention it again.
  • Ryzom Core is all of Ryzom minus the level design data (item sheets, NPC locations, etc)
  • It is all of the artistic assets (minus some missing ligo bricks.)
  • It is always synced with Ryzom's own source code bidirectionally.
This means you can contribute in this way to Ryzom Core and it is immediately available to Winch Gate to use or not use. For example we mentored a student who added guild-based missions - a guild leader of high officer can accept a mission on behalf of the guild and all of members can contribute to completing it. This is now in Ryzom and available to their content developers.

I can't speak directly for them but I can say that when features are developed for Ryzom Core we apply them (unless they're radical game-breaking features, then we branch them but keep them.) You have the ability to do this today. There are half a dozen of us running Silan-shards for development. There's one whole new non-Ryzom themed game using Ryzom Core. And everything you develop can be offered to Winch Gate for the live game.

And I'm sure they'd gladly accept any volunteer efforts. I know we would in Ryzom Core.

Karnig, I agree that not so many ppl take part in Ryzom Core Projekt, but there are a couple who did and still do, and their contributions are significant. For example, there was a major code revision of the NeL engine which, in the original version, was somewhat messy to say the least, and quite a lot of bug fixing.

I fully agree that those who dream to run Ryzom themselves highly underestimate the effort and cost necessary to do that even without major code change. While WG clearly is far from being perfect I also tend to doubt that those asking for going OS with the whole of Ryzom are able to do better or at least equally good.

For example, there was a major code revision of the NeL engine which, in the original version, was somewhat messy to say the least, and quite a lot of bug fixing.

Much of that code revision to NeL was me and dating back to 2003-2004 it was myself and a fella named 'Debug'. After the last bankrupty I forked NeL (called it OpenNeL) and we gutted all of the STLport specific garbage out of it so you can switch freely and then began porting everything in full to multiple platforms.

Today the major contributors whom are players are myself, Kervala and Kaetemi - I hope they don't mind me calling them out. I never said that the community isn't doing stuff for Ryzom. We've brought in some really great people through outside interest and through Summer of Code and we've been working really hard on modernizing tools and so on. What I am saying is that I always hear players say they're going to do this and it's been essentially the same three players for a decade. I really wish I would see more players come in.

Edit: I wanted to mention that I had a tumultous relationship with the owners of Ryzom for many years. I always had to fight to get my patches accepted. When Winch Gate took over they immediately asked if I would be willing to merge back and invited me to help. These guys do a great job of collaborating with their open source community unlike most commercial companies with an 'open source' side.

In case people haven't seen there is a new announcement, our concerns have been answered:

No need to panic. You can retain lvls if you wish, or restart if you wish, or mix it up a bit.

Mass genocide does not sound like fun. However restarting after a kitin plague with only whats on our backs, and our skills sounds like fun.

I like this one :) Agreed!

+1 on the Kitin Plague...
