Hello,

What do you think about the new layout we are working on for ryzom.com?

Being completely candid, i think the ryzom.com page has looked like mud for too long and may have lost potential subscriptions, very excited about new layout -- would not even mind if it is employed immediately. i don't mean any offense to anyone at all by saying it this way but sometimes it has to be said blunetly.

my 2 cents:

1) i still believe that the patch notes should be less prominent, lower down or off to the side, (so maybe instead of where it says "next events" patch notes can be concisely displayed there instead)

2) and forum / support email / ceb tool should also be prominent because these are used heavily

Screenshots should NOT link to a FaceBook page, really. (I presume this was a shortcut to allow the mockup to go un-dead (it's not really "live"). )

Links to "News" should not be more than 6 months old. A link marked "Older News Items" should go to a different page with archival News Posts.

I would move the big lumps about community, Sandbox, Roleplay to a second set of pages with some nice picturesque links to them, then put the bottom list of features close enough to the top so that you can see them without paging down twice.

Somewhere on the front page or one level down, it should be clearly noted that Ryzom is NOT a free to play game but is a pay to play game with reasonable subscription rates and a level-capped, no time limit free trial.
Example
On the main page have a link:
[ url=http://ipsum.ryzom.com/player_options.html]Play indefinitely for free[ /url]

at the linked page:

Play for Free for as long as you like, then Support the Game with your subscription.

You can download the game (LINK here to downloads) and play Ryzom for free for as long as you like. There is no limit on the skills you can acquire or where you can go in the lands of Atys. You can even own a mount, fill its packs with goods and ride. There is a level cap. You can only advance to level 125 (out of 250) in each skill that you use.

However, we still have to pay the bills. Ryzom doesn't have mini-transactions or pay per item shops for little extras. We think you're going to want to support the game and subscribe. If you subscribe to Ryzom (LINK to rate schedule here) you get a few advantages: Removal of the level cap. Automatic doubling of xp for each action you do. The ability to buy up to three packers (mobile storage), and the ability to buy and use an apartment and to take things out of storage in your guildhall.

Obviously someone with actual marketing experience would want to twist the words so that they were attractive to people, but I've seen a lot of "oh, it's not really free?" comments in Uni.

Very clean look, very web 2.0

I agree with what Bitty said plus maybe more links at the top.

It looks A LOT better than the old one.

But i don't think you really need to go for a 1024px monitor compliant layout anymore. Ryzom is barely playable on 1024x768 or 1024x640.

Edit: Oh i didn't notice the unstoppable image slider. Very small tweak, but very important: Make the image slider stop when the user uses the controls. There is nothing more annoying than image sliders that don't let you watch the images.

I'm glad to see something that has been a sore spot for ages (the homepage design) is taking some priority. This is your hello to the world, and to be honest, what was there for years is terrible for attracting players.. this is much more likely to attract attention.

I do like the download links right front and centre, but there's missing links to forums, accounts and a few other things that really do need to remain available.

I do suggest more honest images of in-game, there's been some photoshopping done to the ones there, which don't give one an honest depiction of the real deal (making things nearer in greater focus etc), I don't agree with that as honest marketing, ryzom still looks great even for its age, no need to go deceiving people about what it really looks like..

Otherwise, a great new start =)

I agree, at the moment it stops on mouse over

I know that it's modern and hip nowadays to apply more make-up and touch-ups on screenshots than an A-list celebrity before a close-up, but do you really want to use those screenshots for the new website?
They are completely unrepresentitive of the actual game. Neither the look, nor the feel of the game, which is more important than just looks.
What's worse is that new players are going to look at those screenshots and say "wow, that looks awesome!"
And then they will play the game and they will say "wtf?"
They will feel cheated or greatly misled and will feel negatively towards Ryzom so I think it would be a big mistake to use that.

Otherwise the site looks alright, I guess. I'm not a big fan of Web 2.0 -style websites where getting information is really hard.

you could allow/invite/promote the players submitting their own "best screenshots" we all have plenty even me =)

this will give a much more representative outlook on what the game is. alot of screenies are impressive without touchups

Very nice and uncluttered. I think its a good idea to keep the front page concise and simple. Having events on front page is another very good addition since it means players don't have to dig into the forums to know something is going on. Other than adding links to player tools, forum, and support/account stuff i think its a good idea to make the site user friendly for people browsing on tablets. People will be 'shopping' for games on mobile before downloading and installing on desktop.

Sceenshots are a cool idea for the slideshow. As long as you have some pics showing actual ingame views then it should be ok. Every game website out there has fashioned their pics into hyperrealism, whether photoshop or development machines, but don't set people up for too high expectations. Provide a page of screenshots or something.

Probably just me but I'd love to see a light background and the logo framed in the typical world/space/etc. Too much dark looks tacky to me. I love the general layout itself though and I hope it's implied that there won't be some awful background trying to fill up any and all whitespace.

Some more navigation or jump links might be helpful too. I'm assuming the info that's currently there will be reworked to optimum.

Really great to see this finally being done though. Much needed for a very long time.
