Lordoy Karan,

You recently imprisoned one of my companions, Staerano. While I can understand the disturbance caused by his remarks, the totally illegal action you took against him is unacceptable. Staerano is not a subject of the Kingdom, but a citizen of the Federation and an active member of the Eternal Moon, a Kamist guild. It was perfectly understandable for you to invite him to leave your territory, by force of arms if necessary, but not to hold him against his will.

So, even if it means taking inappropriate action, I'd like to inform you that I'm holding your ambassador Ser Nilstilar prisoner. For the time being, he is being treated with all the respect due to his rank; a situation which may change depending on how you treat Staerano. I would like to add for your ambassador's benefit that he resisted arrest as best he could, but he was in no position to refuse me.

If you want to see Ser Nilstilar again, you'll have to return Staerano to us. The exchange could take place at the Loria wormhole, in neutral territory. I also hope this exchange won't take too long; the bhyr-based diet could be detrimental to your ambassador in the long run...

I'd also like to make it clear that this is a personal act of protest on my part, in support of a friend; the Federation has nothing to do with it, and I've been reprimanded for it, but it doesn't matter, because the main thing is that Staerano finds his way home soon.

Please accept, Karan, the assurance of my highest esteem.

Hao Kan Natikwaï Wa'laï Sen-Siang, Senior Officer of the Eternal Moon.

Royal Councillor Filira Zagabranth picked up the letter handed to him by Karan Stevano. He waited patiently for the monarch to emerge from the reflection into which this missive had plunged him.
"Filira, what do you think?
- If you don't mind me saying so, I've heard that the Trykers spent a whole evening laughing about this kidnapping, in which the abductee is totally willing. The threat doesn't seem very serious to me.
- Ambassador Nilstilar has, it's true, been strange for some time."
Karan paused for a moment, resuming his reflections.
When he spoke again, his mind was made up.
"He remains, nonetheless, the Kingdom's Ambassador. Any attack on his person is an insult to the Kingdom and cannot be tolerated."
And turning to his secretary:
"Summon the Tryker Ambassador as soon as possible!"

Salazar was tired when he returned to his chambers in Yrkanis. The Taliari Assembly had been exhausting - not for its length, but for the various queer ideas shared, the wisdom (sometimes) and the idiocy (too often) expressed, the disrespect for their own gouvernment and laws and the seemingly total lack of historical and political perspective. It was like they had fogotten every aspect of their history - apart from the Matis slavery bit, which seemingly was harder to forget than their Nation being thrown to the Kitins by the Zorai, who closed their gates to keep them outside, or left alone in the cold by the Fyros when the Matis Ursuper marched into the Lakelands. Ah, yes, and the bit when they broke a treaty and found themselves in a War.

Yes, the Karan wasn't easy to deal with. Like the Sharükos, he had been a spoiled child, and his temper was delicate at best. He wasn't Yrkanis, for sure - but then an Yrkanis wasn't born every day, nor a Still Wyler - or a Dexton, for that matter. Still, he had had any legal reason and right to arrest Staerano, based on no less that three testimonies. That was more than the Fyros claimed to have against the former Filirae Canillia. And those testimonies actually were never presented to the Court, despite plenty of loud-mouthed boasts. And as in every case where you have to deal with circumstantial evidence, you have to deal with it by keeping an open mind and an astute recognition of the possibillities.

Salazar slipped out of his dusty robes, placed them carelessly on a chair, put on a thin silken dressing gown and sat down to write.

Your Majesty,

for sure you have already heard that there was a Taliari Assembly, following your invitation of the Tryker Ambassador. And you will also know that Ser Nilstilar was set free and has now returned to Matia. Some of the scenes which led to the Taliari's pressure on La Lune Éternelle to set free Ser Nilstilar were curious, others downward strange and some just awkward, but good sense triumphed over stubborness in the end.

Alas, the liberation of Ser Nilstilar was only part of the decision made. The other outcome was that the Tryker Ambassadors will come to Yrkanis to negotiate the release of Staerano. They also believe that fellow Lakelanders, who will accompany the Ambassadors to Yrkanis and will peacefully demonstrate in front of the palace may help them in their assignment.

These efforts at negotiation are pretty much fair game, of course. I would suggest a careful study of the testimonies and, if Staerano was already questioned, his statements, so that any decision that will be made stand on a firm legal ground.

Yours respectfully,

Salazar Caradini

He re-read what he had just written carefully, then dried the ink with sawdust, sealed the letter and rang for his boy.
