perhaps a step further would be to introduce a particular font or text colour for role-playing conversation and a hotkey toggle to switch it on or off. Like, for instance, when you toggle RP on, the text goes italics. Then people could act as their characters in any chat, and be clearly understood in that context. I'd be happy to even make something like that part of the CoC. When you are in italics, you act atysian and don't ask questions about SYS.INFO, the linux client, or talk about the world cup.

Someone else suggested the idea of separated chat's which appealed to me, as much as RP-ers dont want to heard about sysinfo/worldcup/linux nor do regular players want to hear about some fantasy being lived out loud.

some sort of setting enabling or disabling chat channels would be great. mayb even during character creation where you can choose to have UI start in regular mode or RP mode, when chosen RP mode it auto hides sysinfo and replaces around with around-RP and region with 'LoudVoiceRangeName'-RP (someone stated around was not far enough but region being to far for a char's voice to travel)

no no, those conventions are not just about "some friend people around me". Event team members themselves use it.
...except when they don't. I too have seen event teams use Around, but I've also seen them create channels or use other channels. The fact that the event teams themselves use different methods tells me that there are multiple acceptable ways... and also no real consistent convention.

Sometimes, i'm asking myself if we all play the same game. Looks like, no.
When I worked night shift and could only play at hours that matched up with European afternoon/early evening, it was a completely different world from the Atys I know. The difference between 0200-0700 UTC Ryzom and 1600-2100 UTC Ryzom is as night-and-day as you would expect going from night to day.

Thus, the around channel is naturally used for roleplay interactions. It would be good if 2 lines state that when the game start, with a link to learn more.
It's also naturally used for other reasons. Having a separate channel would stop a lot of the problems caused by the current single channel that we cannot seem to agree on what it's for.
Zendae
Those 2 lines won't bother you nor force you to do something.
...except that if you use the channel for non-RP differently from how others use it then you'll catch flak from those of differing opinions, leading to the sort of strife and conflict that I personally would like to avoid. I mean, you are theoretically correct, but reality doesn't always match theory.

There is no issue here, just helpful constructive comments about an idea made to live better together.
Only issue is the one you create unfortunately very often.
If my failure to agree wholeheartedly and without reservation that this is a good idea with no changes whatsoever is "an issue" then so be it. Let us address it head-on.

Simply put, I feel that your idea is very well-intended and quite simple to implement, but would also not achieve the desired goal. A goal that you and I share. As we share a common goal yet I doubt the effectiveness of your proposal, I offered an alternative idea. Is that an issue? I hope not, or else there is no possibility of ever having constructive discourse.

My take is that if your idea were implemented earlier, then the flaws in it would've been exposed earlier, non-RPers would still be using Around the way they do now, and we still would've had a conversation about the purpose of the Around channel. The only real difference is that we are having that conversation now instead of years ago.

Now tell me, what would be so horrible about adding a separate Roleplay channel? The only downside I see is that a small minority would have to click a different chat tab than the one that they are used to. Can you offer a little constructive criticism on my idea?

Do not assume that you speak for all just because you are the loudest voice; there are many who disagree that simply have no desire to waste words on you.

Same reason as meetings, mainly for translation (to not flood to much "around cc" and keep it readable.

The goal is not to set the around channel roleplay-only, but to inform that roleplayer and the Ryzom event team are using it for roleplay only.

Word order is important. "The Event Team uses only the Around channel for roleplay" (which is more or less true) is not the same as "The Event Team are using it for roleplay only," which would mean that OOC comments went into some other channel.

Agree with some +'s.
Admit I skipped all the flames and I'm replying directly to first post.
  • First 2 lines should make it explicity that some players use the around channel to Roleplay, as you already say
  • Associated link should make it explicit that all game interactions RP or noRP should be based on respect and the premise that we all belong in game
  • There is no such thin as Roleplay rules, other than mutual respect and abidance by the game's code of conduct. So any informative link should include and motivate good game interactions and discourage sociopathic behaviours hidden behind "RP"

Good point on the extensive first pop up messages, which are in my opinion not player friendly: Text to small, to complex etc. Maybe another "more praxis, less reading" tutorial would be better? Maybe make a post about this?

You are also encouraged to tell us how you were personally confronted with your first Roleplay interaction on Ryzom if you like.

My first experience was really uncomfortable and most of them have been since. I play a character named "Victoriacamper" created at a time when forums were burning in flames about camping, and like after 10 years of absence. I approached many people with roleplay interaction, playing a fierce zorai girl who can handle everything despite her low levels and the fact that her guild and most of her friends are mostly gone, I have been confronted with ignore, insults, harassment, and a general disinterest in roleplay, even from those who call themselves roleplayers, and even direct attacks in noRP channels and forums. I find most people are rarely interested in getting to know the character and morely interested in knowing what player is behind this character at any given time. Just my experience, way off topic but you "encouraged" it.

Proposal accepted.
We will also add the same kind of description on the other channels of the game, except the guild and team ones, so that their status (HRP / RP) is clear to everyone.

I much prefer the event specific channels for events ... around is a good start ... but to advise of availability.

No objection to an explanations as long as it is not written such that people will infer that RP is to be given preference over any other chatter such as "Hi Revvy, How was ya holiday ? .... oh Got coal in ya stocking again ? .... "well whaddya expect ?".

Can it be made that if you close the channel window (uncheck a box) , you also won't see chat bubbles that appear in that channel.   This way if the channel goes sideways ... we can uncheck a channel and be spared what we'd rather not have to "listen" to ?

I often did this when I was in a region during an OP Battle and would rather not see mcuh of the discussion.   If I wanted to hear people arguing during all of my free time, I wouldn't keep the kids locked in the basement.

The idea was to provide some context on what RP is and how to do it, the addition, as much as well intended, fails big time on this regard.

There was a special Ryzom Forge meeting about feedback to (not just) these messages. There were several suggestions made by players about how to improve it.

#45 [en]

I'm sorry, but after reading those meeting notes and having a rare moment of agreement with Victoriacamper, I have to say that this has gone exactly as I felt it would. But so long as the people here on these forums feel that making more channels that allow them to communicate without unwanted chatter is considered "more divisive" than totally isolating them by making them shut off channels completely the same way they avoid these forums like the plague, I don't see it getting fixed. It's too easy to stuff the ballot box when you make those who disagree stay away from the polls.
