An Urgent Letter to Wuaoi Yai-Zhio

Bitttymacod sits at his usual table at Ba'Naer Liffan's bar with a double shot of stinga rum in front of him and a tankard of lakes beer to chase it. A fine parchment of igara wing, some paper and pots of inks and paints litter the table as well. He transfers data from his notebook to a map, then sets it aside to dry. He closes the pots of paint and opens the ink jar and begins to pen a missive.

Unto nair-Wuaoi Yai-Zhio greetings. You are the only high level ranger that I know of to send this Izam. There are great dangers afoot in the New Lands and I beg you send this missive on to the highest level Rangers. You will understand when I describe what I have seen.

Some days ago I traversed the Path from Zora to Kipucka Hill in Void and was startled to see clouds of Goo Vapor nearby. I ran my usual route (or almost my usual route, for I kept running into areas of Goo damage) to Paramount Stock and found more. I have now completed a two-day survey of the region from just east of Staring Stronghold to the western border of Lost Valley.

Observations:

Geographical:

The boundary of the Goo in Void seems to have expanded into previously unaffected areas by anywhere from 75 to 200 meters.

The Void Karavan altar is right upon the edge of the Goo incursion and is only accessible from the south.

The Void Kami altar is right upon the edge of the Goo incursion, but is accessible from the east along the edge of the chasm and from the vortex to Undersprings following the edge of the chasm. I could approach it from the west by dashing through the Goo damage without too much harm as long as I stayed near the ramp.

The Ranger Path at the top of Kipucka Hill is accessible as long as one does not go too far west when entering or exiting.

Staring Stronghold is free of Goo.

The route down to the eastern end of Lost Valley must be taken at the east end of the ravine or along the ridge to the east.

The Zorai Kitin Observation Camp in Void is completely overrun by Goo Vapor, so thickly that I could not see the guards. I assume that they have either fled or been overcome.

The camp of the Masters of the Goo is completely enveloped in Goo Vapor, but the tribesmen seem to be moving about normally. This is both strange and worrisome.

As you can see from the attached map, the entire northwest corner of the Lost Valley has been enveloped.

I have heard from nair-Ulsort that the Zo-Kian Outpost is close to being overrun by the Goo Vapors.

Behavioral:

The very rapid expansion of the Goo damage in only a few days seems to have halted, at least for the moment.

The Goo Vapor clouds that are normally very slow moving are now moving very rapidly across the land, and moving very far from the edge of the damaging Goo. If I were to attribute motive to the Goo (which is nonsensical) I would say that it looks as if the clouds are hunting.

I will continue to map the boundaries of this change. I will also share the map with all homins.

I remain your student,
MacOd Bittty, Ranger Aspirant

Bitty rolls the letter and the map together, calls an Izam and sends it to Wuaoi Yai-Zhio.

[ALL] To Whom It May Concern

To all homins of the New Lands

I have begun a map of the incursion of the Goo into the territory of the Void. So far it seems to have halted, but we cannot be sure that will last.

I attach a copy of a letter that I have written to the Ranger instructor.

Here is my map so far I will be working to extend it.

In service to hominity.

Izam urgent à Wuaoi Yai-Zhio ( version fr )

Wohaaa Wuaoi,

Omg!
I think Wuaoi must know about it as soon as possible as this might be a for-boding of goo mobs in the future appearing imo. Also, perhaps the Zorai council or government!

Swift Izams arrive at the locations of MacOd Bittty and Kiwa-Lie.
Thank you both for your prompt reports.  The information has been sent to Orphie and you can expect communication from them in the near future.

These are indeed strange times we are in.

Well done, Ranger Aspirants.

Viewing with Alarm

[quote]To all Rangers and Ranger Aspirants, wherever they may be, greetings from Orphie Dradius, Guide Ranger and Melga Folgare, Grand Quartermaster Ranger:

Reports have arrived of a spread of the virulence and coverage of the Goo in the region of Void in the Witherings.

All Rangers and Ranger Aspirants are warned to be exceptionally vigilant while traversing this region. While investigation of the increase itself is important, it is also very important that we keep an alert eye out for any changes in kitin behavior caused by this change in the Goo, not only in Void but elsewhere.

We urge all Rangers to cooperate to the fullest extent with all national responses to this worrisome change and to report freely any significant observations both to them and to us.

[Bittty once again sits in Ba'Naer Liffan's bar and scribbles on his map and consults his notes.  He takes a brush an some violet paint, diluted to a wash and fills in areas of the map. He sets it aside to dry, then writes on a sheet of parchment.  Once it is dry, he calls over a young homin and the papers and some dappers exchange hands.  Shortly thereafter the following letter appears on all the usual posts and stable walls in the New Lands.]

Germinally 26, 1AC, 2595.
To all homins who read this, greeting:

I have completed my survey of the new boundaries of the Goo in Void, as shown in the attached map.  There is only one small area of uncertainty, near the Outpost of Zo-Kian, but it is full of aggressive kitins, so details there are unimportant.  I also tested some previous measurements and it does not appear that the Goo is encroaching further since my first, partial survey.

A quick survey appears to confirm that there is no expansion of the Goo on the margins of the Grove of Umbra nor the margins of the Knot of Dementia.  This makes the change in the Void even more mysterious.

In the area near the largest incursions there appears to be a strange rumbling noise.  It is not the usual creaks and groans of the growing Bark, but something I have never heard before.

The slopes down from the Paramount Stock plateau are particularly hazardous.  The Goo incursion does not follow the crest, nor the base, nor any intermediate altitude, but varies with location.  Homins hunting in that area should be especially careful.

Homins who are using the Witherstock Farm as a base for hunting should be aware that the Goo has penetrated to the Eastern edge and that it is not possible to go around the hill in that direction without taking damage.

Aside from Void, what other regions had large pools of goo before this encroachment began? The only place outside of Witherings that comes to mind is Silan. But if Grove of Umbra and Knoll of Dementia have not seen similar goo encroachment, I suspect that Silan has nothing to worry about either.

Digging through the archives, I found an old map that our dear Bittty drew years ago that seems to indicate that if the Void goo is the only one growing at the moment, the regions to watch closely would be Haven of Purity and Maiden Grove; two regions that do not usually have a shoreline of goo but might soon due to their proximity to the one body of goo that is expanding. While Grove of Umbra and Knol of Dementia also deserve monitoring, I suspect that they are of lesser concern that the regions that lay between them and Void.

In any event, I do not see the goo escaping Witherings without completely engulfing the entire jungle, so I would not put too much effort into looking outside of Witherings... for now.

Just my two dappers worth.

There is Goo in Darkmoor that appeared during a time that the kitins were being very active.

There was also Goo in the Forest down in Heretics Hovel and Upper Bog. Those were the product of a Marauder tribe manipulating goo and infecting Gibbais as well.
