I noticed on the last patch one of the fixes was to make the path ./local.

I have mine under .ryzom for the linux operating system.

Also when ubuntu installed it it made a link in /opt.

What is the path looking for?

Does it look for something different in the beginning when it first starts up than when it is already running?

Does steam have a different path?

In my case, with a linux not ubuntu:

Steam ryzom location is :

~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Ryzom

Client out of Steam are in (direct Kervala's releases):

~/ryzom

As you can see, none managed by root.

Using Linux mint my directory for native client is:

/home/myname/.ryzom

This may sound like a small thing... but where are the updates going then.

Wow... I guess I am an odd one. My Ryzom install is /opt/Ryzom

Probably because I am an uber-geek!

I am a Fyros. What more do I have to say other than that?

When I downloaded my original client from ubuntu it installed to /opt

Not necessarily über-geek :)
/opt is commonly used for add-on packages on Unices with their spirit (i.e., initially, same kind of hierarchical directories).
It’s also very useful when you make separated partitions, so you can save, restore or upgrade one part easily without touching or losing other parts.
In my mind, I believe that it’s better to distinguish well important and well-checked applications from those not important for the system or professional activities and not in a Unix-like distribution in /home where you do not have to manage some sticky bit or any root permission. But, really I can say what better is.

Ha just came across this post. I had forgotten it.

And now here Oct. 18th, 2016. They have finally managed to rearrange things sufficiently the game is no longer playable.

Players complained when we were using ~/.ryzom because it's not XDG compliant :(

So we changed it to ~/.local/share/Ryzom to make like Steam, Qt, etc...

The /opt/ryzom patch was forced by Canonical when installing from Ubuntu Software Center.
