It started out a beautiful crisp winter day with Neama looking forward to the Matis government meeting with the super nice queen, but ended up with her comming home and throwing her learning books from the local established college against the wall. She was fuming in anger!
What happened?
While feeling herself a Matis pasionately involved with her people, even aspiring to the title of Nerhtenae some day (Assassin for the King against all traitors), she felt disillusioned today.
During a discussion near the end of the meeting, the queen asked about the Captured kitin. Homins have neglected to care for it so the governent took over the responsibility.

The ordained caretaker spoke with scared nervousness about the health of the Kipucka (Kipu for short, and his nick name).
He said it was in deteriorating health. It has been huddling in the corner of his pen each day not even moving until nightfall when it would become more active.

Much discussion was had about a better place for its health, When Naema decided to question why we had it in captivity in the first place and suggested we let it go. Also, she asked what have we learned from it? She knew of no published studies, and suggested the Matis might be looked at as cruel because we kept an animal in captivity in an unusual jail. (Although I have killed many kipuckas, it has always been in self defense, never purposely attacking them. I do not beleive in torturing an animal or kitin by bad conditions).

Her views may be closer to the Trykers about letting the kitins live in harmony with us, although it is a very fragile balance.

As a result, other homins giggled at her suggestion.

Also she was told her subject was 'Off-topic!'

For crying out loud, the queen asked about the kitin!

She was also told she was not matis! Well let me assure you, I am matis! But then I was reminded that I was in a Kami guild and should not talk. Well, yes that is true, but i do not support extremist kami views.

In my guild there is kami, Ranger, and even kara viewpoints, even marauder viewpoints in our guild. I currently am an aspiring ranger, although I do not support just 'Observing' things. I will fight to protect my home and forest too! Well up to this point.

After attending my one and only Kami meeting I was so mad i gave away 20 Kami Maga op mats to kara guilds. Yes, that is right! I will never again attend another kami meeting! My guild leader chastised me and i promised not to do it again, but again I feel the same anger against the Matis homins involved in Matis government, they railroaded the discussion and hardly let me speak. (Not the Queen mind you, she was overtaken by the extemists also in my opinion!), So again i will fight against such extremism. Maybe not as bad as what I did to the Kami because it is only a Kipucka after all, but I do not appreciate being belittled! I will fight back in my own way. I politely excused myself from the meeting and went off to my favorit place in the forest to comptemplate my future. I decided to carry signs of protest about 'Freeing the Kipucka' in spite of the Matis Government. I hope this grass roots campaign takes off, and I ask all to support it!

Thank you all for hearing me out
~Naema

Erminantius had just been informed of Naema’s rage.

He decided, even if the dialect difference was likely to distort his words, to take the time to write her.
Deles silam Naema,

We don’t know each other. Maybe should we learn better to know each other.
Please know that I’ve nothing against your individual.
Regarding the captive kitin, you surely know that the study group of the kitins (SKA) is constituted of Matis, Trykers, Rangers and Zorais. That each government has chosen to send (except for the rangers).

Why a captive Kitin?
To better study them, to better understand them, and to better protect ourselves from them, to better fight them.
Maybe there is another approach, like the one of observing them in their natural environment. It’s the way the Rangers do, and envision it. Not mine, not ours. Maybe both methods may have an interest in becoming closer to benefit one from another.

What do we have learned from the kitin?
For now not much, I must confess, but precisely we’re starting to learn. We have a good idea of its diet. We’re learning today that kept away from its usual environment, it decays little by little. We’re in the very act of learning.
Lots of homins will say: “it’s obvious” or “we knew it” or “no need of doing all that fuss for nothing”.
I answer them: “to travel, you start from your home”.

I won’t go further today. And I can understand your anger. But put yourself in our shoes, in my shoes. How could we place our faith in someone we see for the first time and who’s wearing the colours of a guild as heterogeneous as yours.

If the barrier of the dialect can be removed, I agree to discuss this with you in one-to-one discussion.

The slim Matis yawned and rubbed his eyes. It was a long evening at the Karae's Court, with some of the time - as far as he was concerned - wasted on unscientific, very courtly stuff he did not care about but others seem to enjoy. He then had sat down for his report to the Royal Academy, a pot of strong tea in front of him, and now, before putting the finishing touches on it, had decided to look over the post delivered by Menthys to him. His attention then fell to the transcription of a public appeal made by Naema, which let him raise an eyebrow at the beginning and had him almost fuming when he reached the end of it. "Balderdash!" he muttered. Then he gripped a quill and started to compose an answer.

Dear Serae Naema,

I have to say that I am surprised, to say the least, about your recent pamphlet. While I do appreciate the passion a homin can express in various ways, and sometimes the sentiment that goes with it as well I do have the impression that the furor in this case is an unhealthy mixture of half-knowledge, of proper misunderstanding and hurt feelings. I can't and won't express an apologise for Filia Erminantius' slightly heated remark to one of your comments, and most likely are in danger to hurt your feelings myself; however, you neither know much of the care for the Kitin until now (there was no neglection at any time, and he was in both government and scientific care right from the start), nor seem to have any understanding of the nature of the Kitins - and most likely they would reassure you of that fact if they would communicate the way we do.

A Kitin is far from being an "animal" in the same sense as a Gingo is. It is most likely a creature of high intelligence - brighter than, say, the Gibbai or the Frahar - if limited by its body structure perfected for their environment and lifestyle (whatever that lifestyle might be). You might say that it is not a captured animal we study here for better understanding, but a war criminal, yet a war criminal so alien to us that careful study is urgently needed, not least for the safety of all hominkind. Not least that is the reason why the governments of the Trykers and the Zorai, which were informed of our plans to capture a Kitin beforehand, did not interfere at all, nor express opposition. You also might have noted that it was a Tryker associated with the Rangers which suggested to bring the Kitin to Darkmoor as a keep, and another Ranger-related Tryker scientist which was with our Study Group right from the start supporting my suggestions. Now you might say: "I don't care, let the war criminal run free!" That is, though, neither an option, nor a solution. It was neither for Nung Horongi, who died in solitary confinement in the Lakelands, while he had no greater wish than dying in the Witherings, with other Zorai near him. The Kitin is probably better off than old Nung was, for it is our declared intention to improve its conditions of imprisonment, as you should have learned from the assembly you did attend

Since the Kitin is under care, we did not learn as much from him as we had hoped, that is a sad truth. We did learn, though, and we have much hope to learn even more, although that would be much easier if we had another of the same ilk and could concentrate on their ways of communication. We will continue to study the Kitin we have, though, as it is our duty not just as scientists but in hindsight of the benefit to all - and I repeat, *all* - hominkind. It is not just a need, but also the expressed wish of the Royal Family to do so. We will continue, and we will continue with the help of fellow scientists from other Nations and groups, sharing our knowledge. Learning, Serae, is like rowing upstream; not to advance is to drop back.

Respectfully,

Rikutatis had read the pamphlets and heard the cries of "free the kipucka". He was one of the new members of SKA, the college for kitin studies, and this topic interested him. He penned a response:

"So you want to free adorable "Kipu". The white kitin. A kitin of the depths. One of the creatures that have devastated Atys on two different occasions, destroying entire cities and killing countless of innocent homins. What next? You want to breed a spawn of Vorax inside Yrkanis, so that the cute little animals can partake in the ever verdant lands of the Matis? (then again Vorax inside Yrkanis might be a good idea, count me in!)

I have been against the capture of a white kitin when I first heard about it, but that is not because I think it is cruel. But because it is dangerous. I think it should have been slaughtered along with the others of its kind. But since it's in our custody anyways, we might as well try and learn something about its nature so that we can better fight them in the future.

As Salazar so eloquently pointed out, a Kitin is not an animal, let alone a pet. It is a vicious, alien enemy that we are at war against. You criticize the Kamis for being zealous in their war against the Karavan and the Marauders (the same Kamis who spilled blood in order to acquire the Outpost that produced the maga you so proudly gave away to the enemy). You criticize the Matis for keeping a white kitin captive for study and think that they should let it run free instead.

Maybe you call yourself a pacifist, but I think ideas such as those are more dangerous to hominkind than bandits and criminals. I hope SKA will continue its studies and make progress.

Naema awoke and noticed she had several letters in her mailbox and decided to read them over her favorite morning hot beverage.

“HA! My campaign is already getting attention from the Matis government!” She blurted out. 'This is according to my plan,' she thought.

Her concern was not so much for a Kipucka, they were wretched beasts, carrying resources and larvae to new territory establishing new nests. This is the last thing she wanted, especially in her forest home. No, her grief was more the result of feeling snubbed, or ignored and disrepected at the government meeting before the Queen herself! Also, her perceived disrespect that was shown for the Queen also, to moderate the discussion. Many were blurting out what they thought without giving attention to those raising their hands. Naema herself, Ser Salazar, and even Deed were patiently waiting... when she finally expressed her opinion, since she had not seen any published reports on things learned from the Kitin, she made the comment to let it go and was quickly dismissed with giggles. This was not the only thing. What is the point of hearing the views of the people in a Kingdom when other views should be heard but they are not allowed simply because you may be in a Kami aligned guild? If her views will not be heard because of that, she will no longer attend any of those meetings.

Also, Naema was concerned about the reputation of her people and government. If a Kipucka was kept in a pen and slowly harmed in health, her people will only provide evidence of selfishness and cruelty that they are always accused of. Whether the beast deserved it or not was not important, whether some considered it an animal or enemy was also unimportant. She thought maybe many who hated the Matis and cast suggestions of burning Yrkanis to the ground would love to jump on this campaign and express their feelings so she published pamphlets to 'FREE THE KIPUCKA” Not because she agreed with them, quite the opposite. But she knew it would get the governments attention if they did and make them think.

She decided to keep up the campaign for a little longer yet....

She takes out a paper and quill and writes return letters to Ser Salazar and Eminanthus under a cooler head:

Greetings Ser Salazar,

I do respect your position in Matis Government, or positions you have served in and I am surprised at the lack of formality the meeting proceeded in and you said nothing. Even you had your hand up and went unrecognized for a time. All this before the Queen even! Yes, I felt snubbed, or belittled. You are correct. I felt that if I was to be dismissed so casually, I may as well leave. Some did not think my concerns were very important. Hence I doubt I will be at any further governmental meetings in the future, it remains to be seen.

However, I do not feel my question about where the report of things we have learned about the Kipucka were out of line. If we have learned nothing about it, then whether we turn it lose or kill it will have little or no effect on the bigger Atys. However, I am concerned our reputation as a people will be further damaged before all Homins. Only feeding perceived prejudices people have against the Matis.

Hence I simply suggested we let it go and show we are a reasonable people.

Some may say the Kipucka is not an animal, but an enemy. I do not necessarily share that belief. I believe if they are alive, our creator put them here for a reason. The Kitins are organized in colonies like some other living creatures do. This shows a measure of intelligence. Whether it is superior to any other life form, even Merio Glotto of the Royal Academy had questions about this on his 'Treatise on Kitins.'

I have learned in my readings that the Trykers have strived to have a balance with the kitins, so perhaps this is possible. So far, we are all still alive, so something is working although very fragile.

P.S. I do know about this Kipucka, I have visited it several times in Heretics Hovel and provided food for it several times. I have watched it's behavior myself and tried to learn from it. My studies were not so good, but I did put some effort in. Perhaps I am not cut out for being a ranger myself, I only keep the pathways at the moment.

Yours Truely,

[p]Naema
[/p]

 Next she wrote to Eminanthus:

Greetings Ser Eminanthus,

Thank you for reflecting upon my concerns. I understand why you captured a kitin and supported it if we learned something. But I have seen no published reports yet, unless I have not dug deep enough to find them in the public newspapers? Please let me know where I can read the reports.

My concerns were our reputation as the Matis people. Will people start to think we are a cruel people because we torture animals? This is something we are already accused of daily. If we have learned nothing of this creature, then I suggest we let it go and show we are a reasonably people.

Also, I suggest listening to the suggestions of other homins at meetings please. I felt ignored or even laughed at, so I left the meeting. It may have been embarrassing for the Queen too as she was unable to moderate the conversation. One time homins suggested we would reject an action of the rangers and termites and create our own way to keep the kitins out of the forest. The suggestion was wonderful and it worked. So sometimes other ideas work. :D

Thank you.

Yours Truely,

[p]Naema
