Just a few points:

1. Uni chat - was only ever intented as a Q & A channel, it states it on the pop, its "the players" that have chosen to treat it as a social channel.

2. Rites - the introductionary missions you get on arrival on the mainland lead you to it and how to get started with them.

One of the things I loved about ryzom when I started (in Beta) was the discovery of things (doing it the hard way). The current picture I get of Ryzom is that there is an expectation that New Players need to know everything about the game at the start for them to enjoy it. These days I see more are more "Spoon feed" players. Lvl 250s who have very little idea of what that skill really does.

New and Old players are equally to blame for the "Rush to the end". Some New players want to know if this game has all the "Great Features" their old game has. Some old players want to share all their knowledge to "Help" the new player love the game as much as they do.

Just my opinion.

UNI should be for Q and A, there are other channels for social chat (Guild, team, region, around and faction).

Content should be there to be discovered.

nice in theory but
1) most guilds are almost dead, very few if any players on together and even if they are many keep to themselves more often than not.
2) yes, many new players are looking for rapid advance and an "eng game" because that's what they've come to expect from mmos over the years. I see them come in and leave regularly when they find out there is no "end game", that once you've mastered a skill there are 61 others to master and no running around like you had god mode engaged so you can kill anything and harass newcomers (which is what "end game" in most mmos comes down to). Helping them with knowledge can turn some of those around and start enjoying Ryzom, the majority will leave when they get that first master (if not earlier) no matter what you do with them. Not helping them will only ensure they leave, and I'd rather have a few more people than none at all (or a decrease, even worse, and Atys does seem awefully quiet again lately).

Want some feedback from a new player, I think I qualify having < 1 month here.

Uni chanel is an invaluable resource to me as it is. I watch it any time I'm not involved with another chanel like team or guild. The only time I have not had a question promptly answered or seen someones question go unanswered is when there is simply nobody on that knows the answer. Other than that the Q&A part is definately NOT broken or deminished in anyway.

As for the social chat that goes on in uni, I love it. I make friends, learn about my fellow players and have a good time there on a daily basis. I would not have become a member without it I think.

If anything needs to be changed (and I don't think it does) then add a seprate chanel so we can keep both aspects of uni but in seprate chanels.

Just my thoughts as a newbe :)

Until it is decided otherwise, the CSR team will moderate universe chat so that its topic is Ryzom Q and A.

However, some chit-chat is allowed, provided it is Ryzom related, relevant and in English, does not degenerate into a monologue or is dominated by a small group of people. Also, when a player asks for help, please answer the question before continuing the chit-chat.

If uni chat is abused during times when no CSR is present and it is severe, please make screenshots of the chat and submit a ticket.

I will put this issue on the agenda for the next GM meeting, I'll let you all know what comes off it.

Yesterday Sywindt got heavy handed and muted several people for harmless chitchat (in character...) in uni.
I KNOW at least one of those people as a result cancelled their account there and then, after several years..

Nobody was muted by me yesterday, and the player that left did so for other reasons. Stick to facts please, and if you do not have them, do not make them up.

Hey Sywindt... Thank You.

I for one appreciate you taking the time to respond here, and I think that does help clear up the mud a bit.

Greymaji, thank you as well for your input. It's nice to hear a new players prospective as well, and in a way does jive with what Sywindt had added.

Thanks to all for keeping this a pleasant discussion, for that I am most appreciative!

While not one of the newest, I am still quite new by the standards of the majority of the players. The greatest appeal of Ryzom is the community structure. Many have stated that other channels are for chat. I will pose reasons that show how those channels can be inadequate, Team chat is nice for private conversations, but if I am in a dig team in Flaming Forest and Goofymonkey is working with a plod team in the Void while Yorran is helping his guild team with fame runs, the only channel we have for community interaction is Uni... we are in separate guilds, separate factions and different regions, This eliminates team, guild, around, region and kara/kami chats. If as a community we want to interact, there needs to be a channel to support that phase of the game. Using Uni as a community chat channel sometimes causes Q&A questions to scroll by too quickly before someone can see and respond, so this can be a hindrance, but I personally enjoy the banter between friends, rivals and factions. It would be nice to have a channel that would not interfere with Q&A in which to promote this community solidarity

well said, Zhola.

Sywindt, one person told me she considered herself muzzled by you and left game in part because of that. There were other factors also involved, both related to what's happening with uni and otherwise (mainly outside Ryzom), but your actions played a role in her deciding to cancel her account rather than take a break from playing.

#23 Report | Quote[en]

Well, have to agree, very well said Zhola.

Think that the who's and what's and how's and where's of someone leaving the game for whatever reasons for the most part is irrelavant for me in this discussion. Would like to keep it on the topic of the chat channels pretty please! ;-)

Oh crap... did Syw just invade my head...

I can already hear it now...

Goofymonkey says: *cough move it to Uni*
Sywindt says: *hands goofy a lozenge*

I've been here about 15 months, so I'm not a complete new person but I'm far from being one of the older players.

I do see the need for a new social channel as well as the Q&A channel. Personally, I dislike idle Uni chat, I find it boring and stupid. But, I do see it as a valid part of the MMO experience and I do think it should be an option for players to engage in. I try to keep an eye on Uni so I can help people with Q&A but once the conversation gets 'stupid' I switch Uni off and pretend it doesn't exist. I doubt my lack of involvement in the Q&A on Uni really means much to people but this thread as already indicated I'm not the only person that does this.

Having two channels means I can just turn off the Social channel while still being present for Q&A. I believe some newer players see the lack of Uni chat as the lack of players because some sort of constant chat is the standard for MMOs. When they don't see it they wonder whats going on.

Just my 2 Dapper worth.

I have to agree with Kalyndra, there. Newish players that are not used to the "silence" of Uni can see the absence of constant chat as an absence of players, rather than said players being busy elsewhere or simply having nothing to banther about.

Q&A channel is ESSENTIAL, we all agree with that. People need to get their questions answered.

Social Uni chat could and should be an optional tab that people can turn on and off at will. I think faction chat should be the same. Just another tab that one can turn on and off, put on a separate tab, make visible from the main chat, define a custom color for it... I never understood why Faction chat was the only non customizable chat tab and always disliked the fact that I couldn't mute it or shut it down whenever it got too heated up. The only way to get rid of it is to renounce faction allegience...

So, I think it wouldn't be too harmful to have both a social Uni and a QnA channel... and a customizable faction chat. Please ?
