#225 Report | Quote[en]

I am/was a new player. I registered last year but didn't play due to RL priorities. I came back a few days ago with the intention of playing but had problems with the game. Spent many hours trying to troubleshoot. I didn't bother to read the announcements until now. I wish I had done so earlier, I could have saved myself a lot of time.

I won't be playing Ryzom if they follow through with the character wipe (and I'm certain that they will; they won't change their minds).

I get it - times are tough, and the Dev's need to do what they can to keep Ryzom alive. The server merger is a good idea. The character wipe is not.

Companies survive on the good will of their loyal, repeat customers. By implementing this wipe, the Dev's will destroy that good will. Loyal, paying customers will leave. They won't come back. The anger here, on this forum, is perfectly justified. This isn't about the loss of a character: stats, skills, gear, whatever. It's about the RL disgraceful lack of respect for the customers. It's about a violation of trust. It's hurtful.

MMORPG's are a buyer's market. You want to keep your company alive? Take care of of your players. But a wipe does the opposite. It ostracizes your players and drives them away to your competitors. Now I won't presume to guess what the Dev's are thinking, but I'm guessing that they are hoping new players will come in due to the wipe, and the short-term lack of competition of veteran players. And I'm sure that some new players will come in because of this.

But here's the really important thing about this: Many new players will look at this wipe, look at this forum thread, and know that this company can and will wipe their characters whenever they feel the need to do so.

Some new players will come in, sure. But most MMO players are savvy enough not to spend their time and money on a game company that's going to stab them in the back a year or so down the road.

Some of these players have been here for YEARS supporting this game. Do you really think I, or any other player with a sense of self-respect is going to invest time/money into a game that could turn on me at any moment when there are plenty of other MMO's to choose from? Nope, mama didn't raise no fool.

The thing that really bugs me about this is I know that Ryzom was an amazing game. I respect the Dev's for porting it for LInux. And to be honest, I really hope I'm wrong, that others are wrong, and this wipe won't kill this game. But I have little hope of that.

BOO!!

I have no problem with a server merge, or a complete dapper wipe, or even an item wipe but please let me keep my levels. I have been playing for 6yrs or so and have been continually subbed for I think about the last 2 yrs and only really pop on every few months because my character draws me back.
I no longer have the time or patience to re-grind lake and PR dig not to mention HA which took me and my guild mates months of effort. If this goes ahead as planned you have lost one more sub.

I have had my account's for many years now (since 2006). For the past few years I have not been active in game due to RL issues, BUT, I kept my subscriptions running in support of Ryzom.

I do not have a problem with the merge, or resetting in game currency etc, but deleting my characters?

If the new server starts up and I do not have my old characters, I will be stopping my subscriptions, just like a lot of other veteran players will be doing.

I just would like to give a simple information to Ryzom "entrepreneurs".
A company, to survive, must focus on 3 horizons.

In the short terms, it must ensure maximizing revenue and profit. I understand this is what you did with the new P2W scheme. Focus is on profit.

In the medium terms, it must re-invest in R&D, marketing, new products etc... Focus is on technology.
I would like to believe that you try to prepare something awesome for Ryzom and/or you think about a Ryzom 2 or another MMORPG. One cannot survive on a single product.

In the long terms, it must be sure to promote a sustainable relationship with its stakeholders: the community around (virtual or not), the press, the financial people etc... Focus is on people.

What you will do on the 22nd of September is going to opposite direction of any good business practices. You are frustrating your long term customers. You are alienating yourself from your cash cows in order to fulfill your short term target. You are betting they will come back to you, because they are addicted to Ryzom. Many made the same mistake and many died. Do not underestimate the competition of other games (I am always citing The Repopulation which is coming next year).
In addition to that, your P2W system, with 2 different speed of progression, will create a group of elite players (The few veterans who decided to subscribe), a following tiny group of newbies subscribers and few non-subscribing veterans and a final group of newbies who "wants to see before subscribing". This last group, by far the largest, will be lagged. And will lose any interest in the game.
I posted somewhere else more information on this and I keep believing, despite few talked about it, this is a fundamental flaw in your business model.

So I appeal to you, to wait, delay a bit your decision so, with the help of a community which will cool down, we will find a solution to your, to our problem.
Is it to ask too much ?

I think this a bold move. There are a lot of opportunities that new players will have after this move that would have been impossible for them without the move.

New players will have the opportunity to craft items that are useable by others. The way the game was intended. They will have the chance to learn the regions the way it was meant for them to learn them - through exploration and teaming with others of their own level and a lot of hard work. They will experience the true difficulties of going from one capitol to another without the assistance of "trek masters" who will most probably have left the game. The new players will be given a chance to become significant instead of constantly in the shadows of the old-timers.

Seriously, what new players ? Where are all these new players going to materialise from ? Mars ?
They're not advertising, they can't afford to, anyone who thinks loads of new players will suddenly flock in from nowhere needs to return to planet earth, it ain't gonna happen !

If they delete my char, I will not to start over.. I put lot of effort to build my char and to help others, so wipe of my chars is something like kick on my teeth..

For ppl who get this "great" idea: Shame on you, you deserve spit to the face from every homin.

For all others: Thank you for nice time on Atys, thanks to all veterans who motivated me to work harder to get my lvls and thank to my guildies and our guild supporters..

It was nice to meet you all..

Bye Petulka/Pitrulka

PS: Merge is good idea, but instead of wipe, they should close the game and try to sell it to someone or release whole world as OSS and give it to comunity.

But, I do feel like despite being called a mature community we are being treated like children who should be seen (most especially through our money) and not heard.

because it's not real life. Nothing I do here will carry forward into my real future. It's a pastime. It's fun. So... if I can enjoy it once, why not enjoy it twice? In the end, it's all illusion anyway. Unreal accomplishments in an unreal universe, providing a real sense of accomplishment - which I could've gotten from real life deeds. I'm choosing to pass (waste?) my time in a virtual world.

Yes exactly. I could not believe that they decided to delete all chars, it really seems like the stupidest move possible while giving pointless prizes to a few lucky ones... They seem to expect too much from their player base. No consultation at all, no discussion.

While merging servers is a fine idea, despite some obvious problems like event languages, past histories, etc.. Deleting everyones names? crazy. Deleting everyones characters and skills? stupid.
Really you take for granted that your subscribers will be willing to play repeat for another 1,2,5 8 years with nothing to show from before. not even a name...

I will probably stick around to see Atys again, because its a game, and something to do, and i've enjoyed my time with it. And may enjoy my time again. But this seems like a very rash decision indeed. One of the original ideas of ryzom was character death, your main characters would die and your child characters would inherit skills from their 'parents'. So I do feel a little prepared for the idea of character death, but that was with in the framework of a working game. There would be continuation. Some skills that you had worked(played) long and hard for would carry over. This matters. None wants to lose all memories for these past years in game. Do you not recall that Atys is about making an impact, changing a game world? Creating stories for ourselves? You are abandoning everything that Atys was/is by not making an effort to carry players into a new world/server. its sad.

It is simply not true that characters can't be saved. the api stands as clear evidence that this is true. Export all characters, massage the values, import them. obviously you need a coder to figure out the scripts, but SOMEONE there must be a coder! otherwise how could you be running the game?? There are plenty of accomplished coders here if you want it done free even i'm sure.

I really do hope Winchgate reconsiders the options, discusses them with the players, and respects their input. It was said this game exists because of the player base, please don't make 50% or more players leave. In the end i'll stick around to see how it goes, but I may not be paying.

Please remember that whatever your discontent every individual deserves respect. Slurs and other inappropriate comments are not acceptable.

We met this morning to consider the issue and take into account your remarks.

We still need time to find a viable solution and we will get back to you with a news as complete as possible in the coming days. Until then, the events for these next 2 weeks are continuing as planned.

Dear Ryzom team who apparently reads these posts:

I'm new here. But I suspect I speak for the majority of players when I say, that if you do find a way to combine all without deleting current characters and guilds, you should also do a server roll-back to the date of the initial announcement. Many players gave up mass items, or guilds disbanded, during this time due to the announcement.
