IDEAS FOR RYZOM

Merge The Shards. Yes the idea would need a bit of refining to implement, and a lot of dev work. But afaik we're all connecting to servers located in the same place (cyprus?) so latency would not be an issue, if true. i could be totally wrong though. Language barriers? Humans get over/around it, or don't interact at all/much. Shards don't interact atm so no loss there...

op's would be an issue. what else would, though? gh's/apts shouldn't be much of one. i really don't think this would create a massive overpopulation issue...
could always make a new shard/reopen an old one, if player population warranted it.

edit
another problem might be all those dead/inactive accounts with gh's and condos, if there's a limitation on the # of gh/condos in each 'section?'

(you rent apts you buy a condo) (should implement a rent system too maybe, and an 'escrow?' holder for your stuff when you get kicked out for nonpayment of rent)

well if you want some fighting/crying/name calling ...

don't like this idea the different servers have different playstyles so everyone would have to adapt quick or go and i think alot of paying ppl would just go, for the new free crowd this would be great way to find teams and such but it's still the paying crowd that keeps "the yubo's running in the wheels"

and about the language barrier i know for fact it would be a big issue, i don't know what your main language is but i guess it's english and are you up to learn french or german => don't expect them to addapt if you want a merge then it's you that's gonna have to addapt

as to playstyles: never been to another shard so i can't say how that would work. on first thought, all i can think of is 'op's', and maybe some guilds on other servers are a lot more aggressive... no idea. except for this, i would imagine atys is large enough. (i could be wrong, not sure at all). let me know what else there is to be considered please.

finding teams: big issue for paying player also. i pay double (2 accounts) so i can have a team. me myself and.. well there is no i.. yet. kinda hard to find a team on m/l imo. and the idea is for the f2p to like it enough to pay.

language barrier: well me not knowing spanish/french well enough to chat isn't a problem atm. there are plenty of ppl right now who don't speak english well on aristopotle. there are ppl on other shards whom i have never even had the chance to try to communicate with. we could both adapt together in different degrees.. :) (hold hands, sing.... :p ) seriously: (hey wtf msg length limi

it's all about the bodies. dead or otherwise.

#4 [en]

t).... seriously. i don't talk to em now how's it gonna hurt if i don't talk to them then?

QUIERO TEAM! AYUDA MI! YO SOY MUERTO!

wouldn't need a lotta words anyway :)

#5 [en]

1. so why merge if you never gonna talk to them?
2. ppl with alts are the ones to blame there is nobody to team => i nver used an alt i did it all solo or in team => if everyone uses an alt the for sure there won't be ppl looking for teams
3. on other shrads some ppl are more in to rping then on this shard so that could be a problem with the playstyles

1. body count. who wants to pay to play on an empty server there's nobody to team with.

2. me personally, i wouldn't have gotten an alt if there were more people to team with, at least not when i did, who knows maybe later i would have. but i got tired of sitting down waiting to heal so i could kill something else.

3. i don't see that as a problem, personally. create channel feature solves that at worst

yes the idea has some downsides. probably never happen. but it gets the bodycount up. this game is designed for thousands of people. how many you think there really are playing, much less paying. *continued.. maybe.

#7 [en]

continued...* and if there's more bodies on the server, i would think it more likely for a new player to want to pay to play. but anyway, just an idea posted here to be dismembered and dissected as far as possible..... feedback is good.

edit
come to think of it...
there were thousands of ppl playing the beta for free. now, ryzom is free to play to 125 and you see the population....
advertising problem?

Atys is not meant for a very large population. True we did once have a large population and it was a lot of fun, but whenever you went digging in a slightly popular place such as Dyron, FF, or some void spots the Kami Tolerence didn't last long. It went down and you could no longer dig your mats.
I ahve never experienced the other servers, but I have heard that one of them is more aggresive and more into PvP. This is totally in contrast to Ari's current friendly helpful style. The other servers have strict uni. I've heard you get shunned by using uni in any other way.
Language barrier on ari is way different than it would be with a merge. At least the people on ari speak a little bit of english so you can get the gist of what they are saying (or some people can) I was in OotN with only 2 non-english speakers for a while. I managed but it was troublesome and frustrating at times. Think about joining with 2 entire servers where some people may speak NO Enligsh? Do you speak any french or german?I don't.(limit)

Never argue with an idiot; they will just drag you down to their level, and beat you with experience.

I speak only english and a little spanish. How would that help me with understanding germans and frenchies?
The OPs could easily be solved by increasing the cat production again. Maybe have a few less guilds? 2-4 for each language? As in main guilds. People could have off guilds as well. Or an event could be placed to open up the other OPs that were never gotten to when the event first came around.
I believe when Ryzom was shutting down that they shut it down shard by shard? Correct me if I'm wrong. I've heard stories from a few of my buddies that played at that time. A bunch of aris went and joined perhaps the french server was it? They ccreated a guild for english speakers and it went well. The frenchies respected them and tried to be lenient with them, but that was only a small number of people and a few years ago. I'd love for one of them to give their account of the experience on another server.
I'm not totally against a sahrd merge, but there are way too many complications that would come into play.

I'm French and I play on Aniro (I hope my english is not too bad).
I'm not against the idea of playing on a merged shard with foreign people, but I think the biggest issue is about events and roleplay.
If events are played only in english, I think many French or German roleplayers might give up the game. Some political events like a Taliari's meeting or a criminal's trial would be very hard to manage...

I also think that cultural difference, time zones, and language barrier would lead OP wars to huge drama...

I don't think language barrier would be all too big a problem; these days, nearly every civilized country has their kids learning English since elementary school.

Cultural and playstyle differences might mean trouble, though. The resulting server would either have to open three different Uni channels and chats (eventually resulting into three separate communities forever locked in a state of "cultural rivalry"), or it'd have to adopt English as an official language, which would be unfair towards Germans and Frenches, because the current inhabitants of English server would naturally expect other communities to adopt Arispotle rules and customs as well. German and French communities have their history, as rich and valid as the one of Arispotle community, and they deserve to keep it.

Unless it's a choice between merging the shards OR closing Ryzom, I'm against merging the shards.

First of all: I am German and actively decided to play on the English server instead. Why? Because quite frankly I do not like the usual playing style of Germans, nor German communication for what it matters.

Now that I am done with the subjective reasoning, I have a question regarding your argument:

If you are not going to talk to those who got merged because you do not understand their language and vice versa, then how does that help you find teams easier? Do you really fancy teaming with people you cannot even communicate with? If so, I dare saying that you're a minority. I even struggle to properly plan things with people who understand me just fine :P

Additionally, pure player counts is not what matters. If I start playing an MMO and notice that half of the population is brabbling in a language I don't understand at all, it is rather repellent, because I won't feel "at home" and I'd already look forward to the trouble of filtering out the people I can team with.

#14 [en]

Regarding Breony: Even though "nearly every civilized country" has their kids learning English, that doesn't mean that they're any good at it. Especially in Germany (one of the shards) has very poor English skills among the general population, and even those who do "just fine" just do not enjoy speaking the language and consider it work.

Even a bunch of former school mates who took an advanced English course lacked basic English skills and struggled to understand texts.

Also I don't know if it is just a stereotype, but from what I have heard, many French people have high respect for their own language and are reluctant to speak English (if that is horribly wrong, please correct me)

And yes, it's poor role playing if you have to play being the foreigner 1/3 of the population does not want to talk to.

#15 [en]

And as already mentioned, it's very poor etiquette to expect everyone to speak the (only) language you speak, unless it is the established language of the country, land, game, etc.
