Its more like: You are unable to check durability when the crafting window is open. As it's a blocking window.

"Because we do" is the only real answer which is equally useless.We want to be able to check it. To know when it's about to run out. etc. etc.It doesn't matter "Why".

I would fully settle for crafting window not blocking mouse-over tool event. That surely isn't intentional.
