Hallo homins

You all experience the automatic translation that is now available on AROUND, UNIVERSE and FORGE channels. The translation however might go very wrong in case of Ryzom specific content. To make it a little better we need create a dictionary with Ryzom and gaming relared terms that will correct some troubles with translation. The list is public to read and export via DeepList application you can install from the AppZone.

Public changes are not allowed however you can use this forum thread to suggest any additional troublesome terms or situations you have experienced.

About week ago there was a bad translation. In French it was "le serveur pédale?" somehow in English it translated to "the faggot server". I hope most of us knew it was a poor translation but the word is still offensive.

The verb "pédaler", means to push the pedals of something. But it is also an idiom that means to get nowhere fast. That's what the player meant, talking about the server where Ryzom is running on.

But a server can be a domestic serving at the table. And a "pédale" is something operated by the foot, like a bicycle pedal. And in more familiar and offensive language, it means a homosexual man!

And why do they use "pédale" to refer to a homosexual man? "Pédale" is a derivative of "pédéraste" (pederast).

When I tried the French phrase in Google translate it gave me "the server pedal" as the English translation.

Go figure. :)

Aside from the usual metaphors, idioms and so on, some place names are translating literally. While these are easy to figure out, it might be useful to fix these so they are consistent with the names used in the various languages.

We will include most (if not all) location names. Same for homin jobs or titles and also animal and plant names.

These lists are known and mostly final so we didn't add them yet. Most of these terms are part of the database already, just for other applications, so I guess I will clone what exists and import or add the rest. This is the easier part.

The harder part is to cover terms that are commonly used by players, cause troubles but are not in any list like specific Atys terms (elyps, kitin, dappers), gaming terms (rez, lag, pw) or words from Atys languages (like "bakun" reported earlier).

Does DeepL support some type of escape characters?

It would be good if we could use something like quoted text to tell it not to translate a phrase. That would solve a lot if issues.

I am not sure if you mean an option for players to use it directly in messages or if you mean the automatic translation itself.

You can use ">" prefix in your message to prevent any translation.
Example
>This message will not be translated

In case of this list (from what I know), the correction will be done on our (Ryzom) side. Ulukyn will take the export of those terms and make a dictionary for each language pair that will be used to along with translation to prevent wrong translation.

Directly in the messages, I was thinking of something along the lines of:

Ex: Just ate a big bowl of "jambalya" for lunch.

And have everything translated except "jambalya". Of course I realize there would be issues with that since sentence structure (adjective/noun) and order of direct/indirect objects can vary with language.

Can you create another thread with your suggestion in ideas section? This is actually not bad and not hard to do, imho.

Drop it to my DM or to #pj-ryzom_wiki

All tribes are in the list now, btw.
