#1 [en]

Hi,

I tweaked/changed a few of the interface textures, namely, the entity radar dots, the npc icons (mission, hand-in, talk), the radar itself and matched the other menu-bar buttons with the others.

its only a minor change.

they are just the plain .png texture files no xml, the only changes i did are the above mentioned, others are very minor like little cleanup of floating pixels and some backdrop shadow tweaks you wont even notice.

just extract the achive into the ryzom folder so that your user folder and the achive's user folder match up.
-if you only want the dots+radar, only use "texture_interfaces_v3"
-if you only want the mission icons, only use "texture_extra"
-if you only want the menu-bar icons, only use "new_texture_interfaces_dxtc"

Warning:
when the game adds new interface textures you will have to swap out these files as they will miss new additions.
someone could write up an xml and/or separate the textures if they would like im no good with it..

As long as it's just the interface, it's probably OK.

Illegal mods are those that let you "act" without doing it directly via keystrokes or the built-in macros.

The modifications, although only minor and only to the .png files, are still under the context of the "client code" and they are therefore not legal, within the framework of the CoC, until approved by the development team. It was not wise to publish them publicly without this approval.

ah my bad, then the map.xml i posted in the higher map zoom topic would fall under the same rule?

for future reference what method should we use to ask for permission/approval?

i guess its too late to edit my post to remove the link?
thought the user folder was designed to have players make mods, so i didn''t think to look for approval

I don't see how it's different from syphox's interface mod (which alters texture and interface files, a much bigger modification than this one), why shouldn't it be allowed ?

I was stating the CoC policy and how it affects modifications of this nature. I was not making any comparisons as to why some modifications may be accepted or tolerated and others are not.

Your words, coming from a position of authority, may have chilling effects on other enthusiastic players, who may feel less inclined to share their modifications in the future. Even small ones, like this. Please weigh your words carefully.

By the way, I fail to see any wording regarding client-side modifications. Please state the exact paragraph. If you are thinking of the "exploits" section, I would argue this mod grants the user NO advantage over other players, except a small increase in their quality of life. It does not automate actions, give them forbidden knowledge, or anything else I could think of.

To be sure, this is the entire text of the CoC, right? http://app.ryzom.com/app_forum/index.php?page=topic/view/21885/

Precisely so. It may go so far as to hinder Ryzom Forge as there is no clearly defined policy regarding strictly cosmetic mods. Such an omission can indeed have a chilling effect.

The mere existence of the Forge implies that some level of player contribution is desired. Balancing that desire for player involvement against the desire to protect intellectual property is something that I personally feel needs to be addressed in more detail in order to avoid future problems. It may be time to revise the CoC if for no reason other than to unambiguously clarify the issue of purely cosmetic mods.

Do not assume that you speak for all just because you are the loudest voice; there are many who disagree that simply have no desire to waste words on you.

In my opinion, this issue should be escalated to both Winchgate and Tamarea for a clear and explicit statement about which client and interface modifications are considered compliant with CoC, which may be seen as questionable, and where red lines towards abuse and unfairness exist and must not be crossed. And me too, I disagree to Arionasis, having read all of CoC and rules available.

the item group client was out there before the patch was officially accepted. Was that illegal too?

This is not even nearly the first graphical mod like that, but the first graphical mod that gets a problem... There is Syphox UI since a pretty long time, there's phoenix spell animations since forever(which would be illegal too in this case?) and there's sfx removal mod for people that have problems with fast and bright color changes.

I too hope that there will be a different official statement...

Its not so much that they disallow the modifications, as such they did not edit or remove any part of my original post.

i made changes to files that they control, at the very least i should have run it by them, which i see as a very valid response.

That does not change the fact that there is a lack of clarity that needs addressing, if not for this particular case then for potential future cases. At the very least give a point-of-contact to run things by.

As it stands, I'm not sure I feel comfortable renewing my sub now that there is some question about whether I can modify the client in ways that allow me to play without causing medical issues (specifically, SFX removal).

I would just like to clarify a few issues because I think my comments caused this post to take a completely different track from the one which was intended, when Magez created it.
My reference to the "framework of the CoC" was intended to mean the concept, rather than the content and I could has phrased that better. Technically it is still illegal to modify the client code but the existence of the Forge, as many or you rightly stated, would seem to contradict this statement.
However, as a consequence of the numerous postings and all of your thoughts on this issue, the Support Team has decided to modify the CoC, in order to clarify the changes which are taking place, so that you can all understand the limits of what you can and cannot do and also what to do and where to go if you have any doubts about the changes you are considering. As always we are open to discussion.
For completeness, I would like to say that I sent Magez an Izam mail explaining exactly what I meant and what was intended by my posting.
