Combat pets and taming would be nice, its not lore inapropriate either. could even make a skill tree out of it.

Have something along the lines of needing to study about the animal, finding what it likes to eat, its habits, ext., and use that to tame it, possibly even needing to train it to do spesific tasks like you would an actual animal.

This gets brought up periodically. The last time I noticed it, 3 years ago, ( http://app.ryzom.com/app_forum/index.php?page=topic/view/19885/1) I wrote as follows:

The desire of players for an option for pets and for mounts other than mektoubs extends back many years. There have even been some very detailed proposals made. (Two examples: app.ryzom.com/app_forum/index.php?page=topic/view/17685/1 and http://app.ryzom.com/app_forum/index.php?page=topic/view/16218/1# 1) There are serious issues of game balance in the addition of pets that actually have offensive capability (as noted by the writers in the second thread); in addition there is the matter of Lore that only mektoubs have been tamed by civilized homins, and only varinx, igaras, ragus and gingos even by the most talented of the Marauders.

That was before Ryzom Forge, but it's still going to be tricky.

First steps could be having a passive pet that just follow you.
Then, to keep a gamplay balance, this pet could be controled to fight, but not in addition to the toon fighting power.
Making your pet fight could be done with a chaneld "mezmerize" spell, so the toon cant move or do anything while making the pet a fighting pet.
