Technical Support

#1 [en]

Hi, just recently a friend, who had just downloaded Ryzom (Linux version in this case) over the link offered at the ryzom.com web site, asked me about technical problems. It worked out that he was using client version 1.1.0 (first I couldn't believe). This version is mere Ryzom software archeology, the first officially released Linux client from 2010, the one with which I started to play Ryzom.

Of course, I recommended to download the latest Kervala client http://ryzom.kervala.net/clients/ryzom_client_static_linux64_3.0. 0.7904.7z, and the latest data http://ryzom.kervala.net/clients/ryzom_data_static_3.0.0.7879.7z, to unpack the client in the ryzom directory, and the data in the ryzom/data directory, and that hopefully resolved all issues like missing apartment furniture and so on.

Only, why is the download site not maintained more properly? Or, in case that support for the Sourceforge repository is discontinued, no new download location offered? I fail to see that ancient software will add to Ryzom's reputation with new players outside Steam.

I agree with Daomei. How many customers has Ryzom lost because of that client.

This is also my point with the help files.

Why can't Ryzom maintain even the minimum essentials on the official website?

At least sticky the forum link to the Kervala link.

Cause Kervala clients are beta and not official ?

Some 3.0.0.xxxx client is actually the official one (on Steam). At the very least, I would expect the manually downloaded ones to point to the same Kervala build as the one offered through Steam.

So I heard this. As far as I understand Kervala make each OS-dependant client in his website before to validate it in Steam. So, yes, when we use the Kervala’s client we are anticipating Steam and testing it. It is easiest for Kervala to check outside Steam.
And also I heard that SourceForge was working on the server side not the client side. But not sure for that last information.

That does not convince me. The dated and therefore faulty and buggy client is offered to everybody who wants to play ryzom but is not on Steam, until this year, that was everybody except Ubuntu users downloading PPAs, and even now, there are newcomers and returnees who do not play over steam or install from Ubuntu repositories.

Kervala's clients are called "beta" because they are not officially approved by Winch Gate when they are published on Kervala's URL, in practice, few if any amendments are made before releasing them for Steam, So the question remains: Why is no recent client offered for download on Ryzom's official web site?

Excepted on Steam, version 3.0 clients are not official because to an incoming patch to migrate from 2.1 (official) to 3.0 (official) clients.

Official windows client 2.1 is not able to support all architectures and was only designed to support 32 bits Windows.

I'm still working on a tool to migrate Ryzom 2.1 to 3.0 automatically and players only will need to click on one button to make it (I'm working alone on it and I have full-time job not related to Ryzom so it could take some time).

We are providing 3.0 client for Steam because it doesn't use the official patch system and can be updated for each platform independently :)

When using a beta client from my URLs, I strongly suggest to download a "full" static client (the ones that are bigger) since they have patch enabled and will patch themselves automatically when needed.

When the full final patch will be released, this "beta" client will patch a last time and switch to official patch servers :)

Are you sure current official clients are so buggy ? We updated the Windows one to 2.1 (the last official client).

Je viens de downloader le client Linux proposé sur le site ryzom.com qui pointe vers sourceforge, c'est effectivement un client en version 1.10.2 (datant de fin 2010)

[Edit]
@Daomei, PPA are availaible only if you do not upgrade to 16.04 or newer.

@Daomei: I'm not sure to understand your post, so sorry if I'm off the mark.
But from my point of view it's very important to says that both Steam Ryzom and Kervala's last updated client work fine for linux NOT ubuntu.

Kervala clients work fine with ubuntu I don't know why you say that it doesn't…

This is way too much tech speak (which I can understand but shouldn't have to)

Most people will:
  • google: ryzom
  • goolgle: download ryzom (I did this)
  • go to ryzom.com (I downloaded from ryzom.com)
  • get it on steam (I heard steam is buggy)
Therefore I have the one from the front of the site, and I've been told it's dated... but it seems to be official.

I refuse to use anything else, if it's on ryzom.com its safe, that's about it.

Telling anyone to use an unapproved client that is not on the official site is highly suspect in the eyes of anyone new (in my experience)

Besides the old client works fine I don't see the big deal.

Of course if there's missing apartment furniture and someone officially tells me to download the unofficial client I will be wondering.. huh?

Can someone update the Linux FAQ page on the wiki? It is pointing to an alternate client which disapeared. It would be better if this page can point to Kervala's page.

Done.
