Not necessarily über-geek :)/opt is commonly used for add-on packages on Unices with their spirit (i.e., initially, same kind of hierarchical directories).It’s also very useful when you make separated partitions, so you can save, restore or upgrade one part easily without touching or losing other parts.In my mind, I believe that it’s better to distinguish well important and well-checked applications from those not important for the system or professional activities and not in a Unix-like distribution in /home where you do not have to manage some sticky bit or any root permission. But, really I can say what better is.
