(Thread necromancy ! \o/ )
Small update to let everyone know that Reshade has changed a lot since my first post...

A new configuration tool has been created to mangage tweaked games AND differents profiles per game. This tool deploys all the files needed to the game, no manual copying !

There are more effects and they can be teaked live with the configuration tool.
It takes away the pain of relaunching the game or fiddling directly with config files.

TLDR : Muche more easier to use and more powerfull than ever !
But still only on Windows...

So i'm using the new Reshade client that Aesahetr mentioned above and i thought i'd share my no nonsense way of making Ryzom prettier without going over the top.

First disable FXAA in the Ryzom game settings (I keep Anisotropic filtering and Bloom turned on in the game settings), then download Reshade here and install it anywhere:
http://reshade.me/

Start the 'Mediator' executable in the ReShade folder

Add the Ryzom client executable on the 'Setup' page of Mediator (It's in your Ryzom root folder wherever Ryzom is installed on your compyter)

Go to the 'Pipeline' tab in Mediator and check the following filters:

Lumasharpen - SweetFX
SMAA - SweetFX
Ambient Light - GemFX

Theese alone makes the game look much better. Lumasharpen makes all textures look fantastic, SMAA removes jagged edges pretty much completely and the Ambient light filter makes distant objects blend in much better with the background sky as well as making light sources nicer.

I personally i also use theese for nicer colouring:

Vibrance - SweetFX
Curves - SweetFX

All these combined doesn't affect my framerate at all if they do, the bare minimum I'd recommend is Lumasharpen and SMAA.

I use all effects at their default settings so once they are selected, go back to the 'Setup' tab in Mediator and click the following:

First click the orange 'Apply' button in the top right corner.
Then click 'Update' in the preset section on the bottom half of the window.
Finally click the orange 'Permanent push to application' buttom in the bottom of the window.
After this you can close the Mediator program and never start it again, the effects will be applied automatically every time you start Ryzom.

The settings can be changed on the fly with the game running if you need to turn on and off filters or want to try different things.

I tried this 'tutorial' but it doesn't seem to work for me.
whatever setting I try, nothing changes in-game :/
any ideas what might cause this?

It's hard to tell what might be wrong. If you had any other 'hacks' like this installed before you should remove/uninstall it before you use ReShade.

Once you've set everything up, the bottom left box should say 'Ryzom Core' and the bottom right one 'Default' or whatever name you gave your preset or you're going to have to select it first. Mediator sometimes starts without a preset selected.

One thing i didn't mention is that i forced Ryzom to use Direct 3D in the Ryzom Configuration tool that you can select when you start from Steam, it could be that you're running in 'OpenGL' but have ReShade set to use 'Direct 3D 9'.
Set Ryzom to use Direct 3D in the Config Tool and set 'Direct 3D 9' in Mediator.

Found the problem, I had not yet 'forced' Ryzom to use Direct 3D, when I did that and made Mediator use Direct 3D 9 it worked ^^
ty for the help to make Ryzom look even better :D

I did however disable the Ambient Light modifier, as it caused a bad glare during sunrise and sunset.

Yeah, i forgot about that because i did it long before i tried out ReShade :)

The Ambient Light filter was the best way to reduce the sharp edges of trees against the background for me, there are other filters to try for that but i didn't like them at all hehe. It's a matter of taste i think and really easy to change with ReShade. :)

true, I like it better without the ambient lighting, but I don't really need the extra effect. the only down-side seems to be that when I leave my Ryzom screen (I use 3 monitors) that Ryzom gets minimised so can't keep an eye on my char at those moments, there doesn't happen to be a fix for that?

I only have one screen so i can't test anything. You could try to run in windowed mode if you have fullscreen or vice verse. I think steam even has a feature to do windowed fullscreen even if the game doesn't support it, some launch option i think.

Glad to see people using ReShade with Ryzom !

@Dhenji : I have posted a translation of your guide with the last version of ReShade in the french section, it might help somme people over there !

Of course, I'll edit it/remove it if you want me to. I didn't ask for permission :)

as for the multi-monitor set-up question... i run more then one monitor, the simple fix is: run client in windowed mode and maximize it on one monitor; in window mode it will say visible regardless of which monitor or other program window your in (i use the other monitor to do countless other tasks, sometimes even running other clients)
