Hi all.

I completed the Tryker and Lakes Mats rite months ago and received the permanent extraction time increase. Immediatley, I noticed that I could dig fewer of my prospected nodes and that it was using slightly more focus... Now that I am almost a master digger it is even more annoying, those couple extra seconds can cost me hundreds of focus...

I spoke with a CSR earlier this summer and the devs agreed to look at removing the bonus from my toon, but they did not find a solution.

So I ask my fellow Homins:

Should the Trykers and Lakes Materials rite be removed so no other players make the mistake of getting this 'bonus'?

While I do agree that permanent time bonus is a bit undesirable, removing it altogether is worse.

I dont know how you digging, but most of the dig time can be 'nuked' by low level quality stanza (like q10). also harmful mode affects time. This is known as two stage digging.

Another consequence of this rite, if not as much advertised, is that you get your focus back when digging sources you haven't prospected. Especially, flowers for the florist occupation.
It may be a very small extra, but one that may have some use, sometimes.

Placio, it should be possible to optimize your digging, however long you have to do it, so that (with reasonable accommodation for careplanning, etc.) you generally run out of focus just as your time expires. This should mean that an extra couple seconds allows you to get another resource or two.

That said, the time extraction bonus is almost of no value for normal digging: you can add a stanza in your prospect to give yourself the same extraction time bonus for very little focus cost, and most serious diggers will heal focus right after prospect anyway, with almost no sensitivity to the amount of focus healed (... and thus the recharge time delay) from doing so. Conceivably, with group digging, it would be beneficial to have one person prospect with maximum stanza time bonus PLUS the rite time bonus, so that every last resource is extracted, but that would be hard to put together in practice, and there would probably be other more important things at stake even if one did.

Anyway, it is basically a worthless rite, except for what Krill noted. And possibly detrimental, for reducing the number of sources from a prospect that you can dig ... which is generally more efficient (due to the free focus recovery after each extraction) than longer time at fewer extractions.

I don' think it should be removed, though: it's another of those quirky Ryzom things that give the game a lot of its charm. ;-)

though i'm far from master anywhere in dig yet (highest is jungle and the rest are still at 51, i really don't like to dig, lolx) i do know there are methods used by masters known as KTS or kill the source, this dig stanza is all harmful dig parts with max rate, you may not as a master always get Q250 dug mats from this method as weak nodes will die quickly, but you will be able to dig more of your own nodes. and a cure to keep from getting gased or having the node exploded is to have someone care plan for you with only ground stability stanza's, because the life stanza keeps the node alive longer thus taking longer for it to die and you to move on to the next node.

i hope that little bit of information helps.

There is a warning against getting this bonus in the Fluffy forums too. Legend has it, there are homins who chose to re-roll master toons instead of staying stuck with the bonus.

Maybe it should be changed so that only high level toons can complete this rite, so they have a much clearer idea if they need the bonus or not? Or maybe have it as an extra stanza which can be used or not, just like Absord Raw Material Damage.

I voted 'No'.

This bonus should be fixed so it does what it should, and not nerf your digging or cost more Focus.

Umm, Arfur, the rite does exactly what it says it will do, add a permanent extraction time bounus to your digging.  To that extent it is not broken in the least.

To those who are attempting to harvest very gently, running the time out, increased time inherently means that more focus will be used in harvesting. There is no way around it. If you are that type of digger you should not take this rite.

To those homins who  kill the sources prematurely, the additional time is irrelevant.

I'm not sure how it will affect those who do two-step harvest.  I suspect that it would simply be a matter of slightly adjusting their switch-over point.

Personally I think that it should be changed so that you gain an increased time stanza that is free (needs no counterpart) so that you can use it or not as the whim strikes you.

I also agree, adding a stanza for +5 seconds time extract that costs 0 action credits, for OPTIONAL use would be nice

(but i kill-dig so only VERY rarely do i have to wait on that extra 5 seconds) (SM 0 and 1)

Converting the perma-bonus into a free stanza (that we could use or not) sounds like a good solution to me.

I do think there are ways to improve the reward for this rite, but changes take a long long time in Ryzom.

There may be ways to compensate for the time on nodes, and rites are an optional part of the game, however the reward is presented as a good thing while experienced diggers know it has permanent complications.

That's why i think removing the current version of this rite will protect others from making a mistake that cannot be reversed.

like this whole post, but i do agree that the rite should give an new stanza with 0 credit required for it's use.

I actually enjoy the reward from this rite. It's not a 'permanent complication' for me. It allows me to dig 28 mats instead of 26 when I dig the way I prefer to. Plus the return of focus on undiggable nodes has been greatly helpful especially for digging in the kitin lair.

All diggers dig a different way. They all see different rewards as good or bad. So it's impossible to say that this isn't a good reward because for some it is. I would consider myself a very experienced digger and consider it useful to myself. I did the rite forever ago and can hardly remember a time when I didn't have the extra time on my nodes.

the "downside" based on the way i prefer to dig is minimal i can live with it... that is why i chose to do it, for the kitin lair and flowers even though i didn't like the other effect.... being "forced" to endure 5 extra seconds sometimes

to me ryzom is about freedom and in a way i feel my freedom has been somewhat compromised, i am not complaining simply stating a fact, the benefit outweighed the cost, but if it could be an optional 0 cost stanza i doubt anyone would complain
