Chronicle - Xyphacanthus : The Sword of the Botanist
For the children of Atys, our time was that of many perils. May the Kami keep our planet sheltered from all such dangers.

In 2574, the threat came from a direction no one could have expected. The Rangers of Atys, advocates of hominkind and hunters of Kitins, undertook to cleanse the bark of all traces of the recent Great Swarm. The tunnels littered the New Lands and the Rangers sought to destroy them via a dangerous initiative. To diminish the domes of the tunnels used by our invaders to emerge into the light, the Rangers bred termites with the intent they would devour the roots anchoring the tunnels and collapse them!

The People of the Masks could not allow them to do such a thing, create such a threat to ecosystems and the Bark. Thus it was decided at the meeting of the Elders, that a group of volunteers seek, by all means, an alternative method to fill the Kitin's domes, blocking their access to the New Lands.

I was designated by the Sages to assist these Initiates and some of our homin allies. At their suggestion, we sought out the tribes of the Siblings of the Weeds and Ancient Dryads for their assistance to aid us in our research.

Chronicle - Xyphacanthus : The Sword of the Botanist

Act 1: A Taste of Chlorophyll
The reaction of our friends the Ancient Dryads and Siblings of the Weeds was at the extent of the danger created by the Rangers of Atys. Outraged at the idea that xylophagous creatures might be introduced en masse throughout the bark, they put together their imagination and their knowledge with us to find an alternate method to block the Kitin's tunnels.

It was the Siblings of the Weeds who proposed to use their "sisters" of the flora to obstruct the domes at the surface of the bark and all assembled homins pondered what would be the best known species to be given such a sacred trust. Our gathered knowledge led us to select rotoas whose roots are strong, solid, supple and covered entirely with formidable thorns to prevent Kitins from crossing the tangle they would create.

The slow growth of these flowers offered by Ma-Duk quickly appeared as problem: tens of Atys cycles were needed to see one reach a suitable size, and sometimes several generations for the biggest. But homin knowledge is immense, and a Dryad immediately mentioned the knowledge of the ancient Matis botanists: some among the most brilliant of them, in the forefront of whom was the old royal botanist Gilado Almati, who could make gigantic trees grow in a few hours from a young shoot or from a simple seed, and so building the cities of the Matis Kingdom in only a few seasons. In spite of the aversion collectively shared by the homins present for the work of the manipulators of the living who violated the laws of Ma-Duk, and in spite of the hostility of the Siblings of the Weeds to this project, it appeared quickly to the majority of us that the urgency and the danger of the situation commanded us to ignore no path. It was thus decided that the gathered volunteers would put themselves in search of Almati's lost knowledge, looking for the trail of the ancient botanical and magical techniques that allowed him to accelerate the development of plant life.

it does seem a bit rash to start experimenting with wood eating termites on a place that is basically one big tree.

Actually, termites live from dead wood. There seems to be lot of religious overzeal in the issue.

Good point, anyway, giving it a second thought. The zorai strive to stimulate the growth of trees, with methods that once even Matis and Karavan may have felt to be over the top. What if they miss and stimulate not the rotoa, but that other tree? Oops ..

Yes, the one thing that scares me about this whole escapade is the memory of the mistakes of the Matis in the past.

The Matis are truly evil!

No not evil - I hope we have learned from our mistakes.

Serae and Ser,

we are not talking mistakes here. We live in trees grown by that technique, so it's far from being new and not tested. How can our country, our population grow if our trees can't? Shall we carve holes in the bark? Shall we cut down our trees? Shall we live like barbarians? To find Almati's notes is not just a solution for the Kitin problem and the colouring of white pages in our books about the past, but also an investment in the future.

Highly respected Filira Salazar,

I do not side with the accusations against the Matis people and their practice of shaping nature as integral part of their culture. And I welcome any search for lost or hidden knowledge, and trust in a sense of responsibility in case the findings are proving risky.

As a matter of fact, not this project is slandered and defamed - though I can name a couple of real risks in it which should be taken attention of. It is the healer Tao Sian who outrageously slanders the Atys rangers to be the greatest threat for the living planet at this time. I have already written to the commander of the rangers to intervene at the theocracy to stop such outbreaks of fanaticism and hysteria, and decided to publish my concerns.

Letter to commander Orphie Dradius

I wish all good success with their search and that it may contribute to work against the kitin threat.

For all of Atys!

/OOC:
At the end of August 2013 or at the beginning of September 2013 we were told OOC by the event-team that the event has to be paused for "internal reasons". EDIT: it was August 9th, thanks to Limai who reminded me of this thread: http://app.ryzom.com/app_forum/index.php?page=topic/view/17770/1 We haven't heard anything about it ever since.

Still the rangers were allowed to continue doing their experiments - even in hidden source lately against the strong resistance of the chamber of nobles, represented by Filira Salazar Caradini who informed and warned Ranger Wilk Potskin about this matter shortly before the experiments started.

In my personal OOC-opinion this is a very sad development when player-governments are being ignored and made "useless" - just because of one insignificant termite-mound, instead of setting up some more of them in the Almati-woods if needed.

Also we Zorai-players feel bad now. The Zorai (and Matis) wanted to find an alternative botanical solution for the kitin-tunnels to be able to persuade the rangers to rather refrain from using termites as it seems dangerous to our characters. Persuading is plainly impossible though, since we have been made to wait with research for the botanical solution, but at the same time the rangers were allowed to continue and even expand their experimentation with termites.

We Zorai-players don't want to be treated like the Matis-nobles-players by the Ranger-Event-Team in the future too. But there is no guarantee that we won't be ignored as well and ranger-experiments with termites might possibly start to occur in the Witherings too after what has happened at hidden source...

All in all we have been waiting patiently since March 2013 (!) when my character Zhoi first suggested to ask the Gibads about their opinion and possible alternatives to the termite-solution. And now the event "Xyphacanthus : The Sword of The Botanist" has come to a halt without any word to us about this matter by the Event-Team for nearly two months :(

So my character has now begun to talk about this matter again during the Assemblies of the circles and the Rangers - simply because it seems unlogical to just let our characters "forget" about the botanical solution while we players are OOC politely waiting for the Event-Team to give us any feedback.
