It is a problem when a player leaves Silan too early. I mean really early, where the player does not know enough of the game mechanics (how crafting works, how to modify stanzas, etc.) to actually play. It is crazy that a player can hop straight to the Mainland after only a few minutes on Silan.

It is not good for the player involved - they quickly become disillusioned with the game and quit.

It should be easy enough to make the 'Leave for the Mainland' mission unavailable until you have got the basics. I don't mean every player should have to do all the missions before they can leave. Some of the training missions deal specifically with how the game works.

I will leave it open for discussion, exactly where to draw the line.

I strongly believe in freedom so I'd vote against this.

Consider that a new player who goes to the mainland too early, always can create a new character. Not much is lost there. The levels are rather quickly regained.

And to force old players who just want to create a new character quickly, to go through beginner's missions again, is dull.

If this is a serious concern, then we could rather change Chiang's mission text slightly, so that when someone wants to leave for the mainland he cautions a bit more.

For a brand new player leaving Silan early is not only bad in terms of the fact that they don't know the mechanics, they also leave without the armor and weapons that doing the training missions will give them.  That armor and those weapons represent an immense cost savings once they get to the ML.  In addition, the later missions (not the training ones) allow you to accumulate a fair amount of dappers -- dappers you will need in the ML.  The Ranger Suit from Chiang isn't a bad bit of armor either.

You shouldn't force it, however:  A revenant player coming to the ML with full knowledge and a welcoming guild to help her really doesn't need the training.  Certainly a "storage alt" doesn't (that might be an argument *for* the restriction, but let's not go there).

When I meet a person who thought that Silan was "tl;dr"  I explain all this to them and strongly suggest that they start an alt.  Then, depending on their attitude, I may or may not help them out with things that they need.  (Hint to newbies: "Give me 80000," is not a good way to start a conversation with me.)

It's not like you ask Chiang to send you to the mainland and poof you're there. You have to go visit the trainers who try to talk you out of it. You're given the chance and advised to change your mind. If you still chose to go then that's YOUR choice.

As Bittty rightly points out, they can always make an alt to go back and learn the mechanics if they really want to.

I'd vote against this idea.

Other games - they give you a cookie whether you succeed or not, in fact you don't even have to participate. Ryzom takes your cookie, eats it in front of you, and slaps you 2 or 3 times for bringing a cookie in the first place.

Silan is meant to be education for the player, not for the toon. As others pointed, if the player behind the toon is any bit experienced, Silan is completely boring and you must keep an option to skip the boring bit.

You could implement a sort of safeguard, a multiple choice test people could take before leaving, to ensure they have some basic knowledge (about DP, malus, wearing magic amps, etc). Trouble is, whoever is too lazy to do Silan might also take the easy way out and answer blindly or ask for the real answers. Besides, this would count as New Content, the rarest bird on Atys.

I left silan (or was it the old islands) at lvl 1 in all and I turned out kind off ok :)

What I love about this game is freedom and forcing ppl to do the mission based starter island to after them end up on the mainland where there is no such missions would be desilusioning em. Better give em an option during the creation of a char go directly do mainland and learn the hard way or go trough the tutorial first.

People leaving silan too early must ignore a whole lot of warnings to do so. Each NPC dialogue from the start of the leaving silan missions says that they cant go back, and should stay if they dont know the game well. If those players ignore those warnings - let them be. They most probably wont be playing Ryzom for a long time anyway.

People who are too ignorant to complete the tutorial wont play Ryzom for a long time no matter how hard you try to hkeep them here. Ryzom is too ... troublesome ... for most of them anyway.

So I finally decide to create an alt who arrives on Silan with full knowledge of "x" number of months / years experience in game, and I MUST go thu the motions of Silan ..... no way

A player returns to game and hasn't played since merge and they must go thru the motions of Silan .... no way, they'd leave.

A player talks his wifie, kid, grandkid, friend, whatever into playing ..... they don't want to be by themselves trudging along thru useless tasks while they could get the same education by asking their sweetie, dad, gramps or their bud playing next to them .... they'd lose interest.

Can't we just let peeps do what they wanna do ? Why the need to impose one's idea of what's best on others ?

As for the arguments against ....

-I can make my wife, GF, kid, gramps, friend etc. better armor, weaps, amps than anything on Silan
-I can teach my wife, GF, kid, gramps, friend etc. better than Sterga, Chinag and friends.
-I can give my wife, GF, kid, gramps, friend etc. more dappers than anything they'd get on Silan
-I can help them get 10 times as much XP in day than they'd get in a week on Silan.

Or, heaven forbid, the can enjoy the thrill of figuring it out for themselves !..... Reading the wiki, look at the forums, etc .... lots of viable options.

Silan is a great tutorial, much better than the original lands for separate races. And while it is a great way to learn, it is not the only way to learn.

I agree that nobody should be forced to pass Silan if she doesn't want to. Mjollren, when a low lvl toon wants to leave Silan without having done any mission, she has to go to all 4 skill tree masters before she is allowed to speak to the Kami/Kara for teleport. Takes half a minute anyway ;), but nobody leaves without prior warning.

I think that should suffice.

no idea how it works but you can skip that by just doing 1 craft mission or something i heard. (no idea how it works but heard it's faster then doing it the normal way of visiting all trainers)

Maybe that it is waived after the 1st mission. Then, crafting 1 pair of boots, taking 2s, including dialogue maybe 10, is clearly faster than half a minute of contacting all 4 masters ;)
