Introduction :

You've been playing Ryzom since the first Beta and you know Atys as if it was your own backyard ? Then this post is made for you and will give Ryzom a welcomed lifting.
To give you an idea, here is a before/after shot (don't mind the difference in time)

Step 1:

We will force Antialising and anisotropique filter using nVidia Inspector software (ATI owners can force Anisotropique filter via the Catalyst Center).
Once started and updated, click on the circled icon

It'll open the following panel:

Settings:

  • Click on button n°1 to create a new profile you'll name 'Ryzom'.
  • Click on button n°2 and browse to where Ryzom is installed then select 'client_ryzom_rd.exe'.
  • In cell n°3 'Antialiasing compatibility' enter '0x000010C1'
  • Set options n°4 to match the picture. 4x Sparse Grid Supersampling is computer heavy, if your computer cannot cope remove the option, set 'LOD Bias' back to '0/Auto' and use the backup solution detailled below
  • Set options n°5 to match the picture

Step 2:

In Ryzom folder launch configuration utility 'configuration_ryzom_rd' (or something like that) and in 'Display' options make sure you've selected DirectX.
  • Download sweetFx and extract the files to Ryzom folder (where "client_ryzom_rd.exe' is).
  • Download now SweetFX_settings and put it where you put SweetFx (it'll ask to overwrite a file, accept).
  • ATI users or if you've deactivated Sparse Grid , open SweetFX_settings.txt and at the top replace the line #define USE_SMAA_ANTIALIASING 0 with #define USE_SMAA_ANTIALIASING 1

Step 3

Launch Ryzom, connect and in the graphical options deactivate 'Bloom' (already added by SweetFx). The key 'Scroll Lock' activate/deactivate SweetFx to better see the difference and key 'PrintScrn' takes a screenshot (saved in Ryzom folder) with SweetFx visible, screenshots taken directly with Ryzom will not show it.
Enjoy.

Don't hesitate to tweak the sweetFx settings and share them with us here.

Hrm... I'm afraid that I don't really see much difference in the two shots (other than the time of day), perhaps because in the second shot I can hardly see anything.

Is there any reduction in CPU and disk usage if you do this? It seems like a lot of work for no apparent difference in visual quality.

(Or perhaps do you have a better set of screenies to show the difference?)

I've changed the screenshots to better see the difference.

By opening them in separate tabs and switching back and forth I was able to see the difference. However, you still have not answered my question about improving gameplay. Does pushing this off onto the GPU help with framerate and responsiveness?

It's quite the contrary, it needs more power from the graphic card to run. But Ryzom is mainly limited by its old engine that can only use a fraction of current graphic card power.

It's obvious that the load on the GPU (graphic card) is increased - the question was though if the load on the CPU (main processor) would be reduced.
Which is something I'd like to know as well ;-)

Unfortunately no, we would have to optimize the Ryzom engine (and I do not have the skills to do so) in order to reduce the load on the CPU.
