Hi guys, I've been playing Ryzom for a couple of weeks..

Really enjoyed the first (training) planet, but once I completed most of the quests I opted to leave for the mainland.

I admit that it was my own fault for choosing to be a crafter.. but I've discovered that all the missions on the new planet seem to be nothing but crafting. Nothing else.

It wouldn't be so bad but I'm really rubbish at crafting! (I had a go at the first mission to make 5 pairs of level 10 boots.. all I managed to produce were level 7-9 ones, despite using lots of the highest quality materials I could afford).

So now I'm kinda stuck on a planet where I'm not sure what to do.. I'm up to about 850 HP so don't really want to start again completely from scratch, but at the moment I'm just wandering about aimlessly like a lost puppy.

Has anyone else made this mistake? If so what did you do?

I should probably point out for anyone thinking of playing and being put off.. don't be, it's a truly great game.
Just do a bit more research than I did before choosing a class and then leaving the training planet without realising there's no way back :D

Cheers,

Hmm where do I start.

Once you come to the mainland don't look at the quests, yes you can do them but they are not important at all.
Mainland ryzom is not quest driven, the quests are just there for entertainment, fame related stuff, and some rites about the lore. You won't really be leveling from doing them.

About being bad in crafting:
I never digged myself so I never crafted either (but have multiple melee and ele masters), in ryzom you are what you have in your hands (the char creation is just for show, only difference is startout weapon). I mean if you don't like doing it don't do it equip a sword and kill some mobs instead, or amps, or ...

About leaving silan:
Alot off ppl say you should stay days, some even weeks there, but I left silan within my first hour of playing (yes I know how the game mechanics worked from beta) but what I'm trying to say here is that it's perfectly possible to survive Ryzom with a lvl 1 char. (you won't have the quest based lvling from silan but you can start directly with the grind), I would advise you to look for an active guild so they can help you out with weapons/armor (the npc stuff is bad) and cats (they give you double xp).

Don't look at it like a mistake but try to learn to know ppl talk with them, make some friends and look if you can join their guild (don't have to join the first guild you see, alot off ppl giving out free gear to ppl that aren't in a guild)

First of all, welcome to Atys.

What you seem to have hung up yourself on is that Ryzom is a game of classes and quests. While the starter island might imply this in some ways, the mainland is very much the opposite. You can do whatever you like, and doing one thing will make you advance in that skill.
Advancing in one skill does not limit your possibilities though, you can max every single skilltree on one character, if you can find the time.

The quests on mainland are there to get dappers, but its much easier to get those by just selling gear or materials, and to get fame with specific civilizations, factions and tribes. So instead of doing quests, I recommend run around, explore, do whatever you feel like! That's what this game is made for.

I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are COLONIZED by wankers. Can't even find a decent culture to be colonized BY. We're ruled by effete arseholes. It's a shite state of affairs to be in, Marceline, and ALL the fresh air in the world won't make any ****** difference"

Thank you both for your replies.. perhaps I've not been patient enough.

I tried to just walk off into the great unknown but Atys appeared to be impossible to leave and I ended up just going around and around. I thought perhaps the missions were critical to moving further afield but perhaps I've been too hasty and not explored thoroughly enough.

I will take a bit more time to look around and get to know the place.. thanks again for your help :)

can i ask you what region you choose to start in?

some regions are less busy then others, making it harder to meet ppl in.

I'm not sure.. I start near a place called the "Majestic Gardens" if that means anything to you? There are a few people passing through.. not as many as Silan though.

Anyway.. just wanted to say thanks again, I've found my way out of the main camp and discovered those Gringos are a bit tougher here than in Silan. So I'm happily running around building up my XP and casing the joint :)

Cheers all

Welcome on Atys

Silan is actually on the same planet (Atys) as the rest of the known world of Ryzom - it's just a different part of it.

Most things have already been mentioned by the others so just a few hints in regards of crafting:

First of all it's important what you wear - heavy and medium armor have a malus which degrades the level of your crafted items. So you should either wear light armor or nothing at all while crafting (the light armor will loose it's HP while crafting though); I usually use some very cheap magic pants in green for crafting as I don't like to stand around naked.

Secondly you have a probability for your success of crafting the full quality which is related to your craft level - if you're level 10 or above in craft it shouldn't be any problem at all to craft those q10 boots (80% success or so)

Last but not least if you're level 10 or above you have to make sure to visit the craft trainer and learn the q20 (or higher corresponding to your level) plan otherwise it'll be tough to level any further as you will craft things below your level.

Hi Libspero and Welcome :-)

The Majestic Garden is part of The Verdant Heights, the forest homeland of the Matis. There are three other towns in this region as well as Yrkanis, where you started, which is the capital.

There are websites with maps to help you explore and lots of other information, including these:

http://ballisticmystix.net/?p=map

http://ryzom.silenda.de/?t=itemdb&s=maps&menu=0&id=13 &tid=9

There is also an FAQ thread here: http://app.ryzom.com/app_forum/?page=topic/view/12824/3#3

The missions on the mainland are not like the missions on Silan. You can do fame missions by clicking on the teleporter guy-- either kami or karavan. Corporals in cities will give you missions for fame. If you want to level melee or magic & even harvest and craft -- most of it is done simply by grinding without missions. There are also enclopedia rites you can do- but those won't raise your skill levels that much.
I also suggest you join a "world trek" to get the tp's to the capitals of the 4 regions. This will expand your levelling field and make finding parties a lot easier. Don't be afraid to ask in region or uni if there are any parties for you to join at your level.
