IDEAS FOR RYZOM

I belive revamping entire Ryzom with high detailed models and textures for foliage, ground trees and so on, is far more beneficial then any other upgrade.

Ryzom is great sandbox and just by adding high rez i guarante it that population would start growing.

Its ok graphics now but it can be improved and optimised.

I hope ryzom lives for very long time as it one of best games in sandbox area that i played, and i played many of them.

I think more actual content by way of areas to explore, new types of mobs (rather than new versions of existing types), and what goes with that, would be more beneficial. The time investment for just making the existing world "look spiffier" IMO doesn't weigh up against the benefits of drawing potential customers (those that are woo'd mostly by the graphics aren't I think going to stick around long term anyway).

That's not to say I wouldn't appreciate higher resolution graphics and models, just that I think the limited development resources were better spent elsewhere.

Yes i completly agree to a point, huge chunk of resources were spent on open source,linux... which is nice but, majorety uses OS like xp. win 7... all that could be spent on improving game, graphicaly and improving inventing new stuff.

Still i love game a lot Quality over Quantity always best.

Streko -- I think you might be surprised about OS ratios. I'm seeing about 50:50 for Windoz vs. Mac/Linux. Putting Ryzom in the Mac Store made a tremendous difference in the population of Arispotle at least.

I agree with Iala that new mobs with new behaviours (in a new region, or even as new species in an old region) would be a far more worthwhile investment. As it is, some machines have definite problems even with the detail settings on the current models and higher rez models would make that worse.

Yes i agree with you i have top of the line computer and on some places lags "graphicaly" and the problem is that areas are not optimized, if lets say devs would decide to insert/revamp ryzom by introducing high rez, there is a lot of work that would needed to be done, complete with optimization.

But they would finaly " lets say start from scratch " had option to fix all glitches and problems they made or left in current state.

Saying that introducing high rez textures would criple machines is wrong, if optimized corectly they can highly improve entire experience with game.

It is not always good to just continuing adding new stuff ingame withouth optimizing already what we have, technology goes old fast so keeping in line and following, upgrading hardware, software, is very important in such industry as Games.

Im just saying that with new make over, good optimization ,good marketing, , well game would explode with new players.

I love the game as is, but extra candy does miracles he he.

I agree only in regards of treetops (they are sometimes really awful)
Everything else looks good enough though.

But a lot of other things (bugfixes and content) have a way higher priority for me.

Yes bugfixes are alway a priority for me as well

Ryzom is great sandbox and just by adding high rez i guarante it that population would start growing.
And with what are you backing this guarantee? And where is your evidence?
"Start" growing? So you think it's not growing now? What about all the people doing the quests on Silan? I can't believe they're all alts, especially since there are a vast number of questions about the Silan quests, the answers to which are common knowledge. "Start" growing? What about the people who joined from Ryzom being put on the Apple Marketplace? (I don't recall the real name of this.) "Start" growing? I joined less than a year ago, got a friend to join less than a week ago, and told a number of avid MMORPG players about Ryzom. Isn't that growth? I guess you're discounting that (or haven't thought of it). If you want growth, are you telling people about Ryzom? Certainly you have more to say about the game than the graphics.

Sure, starting over would get rid of most if not all of the current bugs. And take a very long time, in which other things couldn't be worked on, and introduce a whole host of new bugs.

I don't believe anyone ever said higher res textures would "criple machines" (sic). You have to realize that many people don't have a good graphics cards or lots of RAM.
No matter how well hi-res textures are optimized, there is a minimum hardware requirement for any visual, audio quality upgrade. Hard drive space to store the textures, RAM to hold the textures while they're being used, GPU capacity to render them (or failing that, some of the CPU).
To head off a potential argument, the people who play Ryzom don't necessarily have (or would spend) the money to upgrade their machines to keep playing. A good number of the people I've talked to in Ryzom don't live in first world countries. I live in a first world country and use a seven year old desktop. I don't have the money to upgrade it, nor do I necessarily think I need to. It works well as is. Currently, Ryzom will run on a netbook with an Intel video card and 512MB of RAM. This is a good thing.

Optimizing the game further, I have nothing against (if it indeed can be optimized enough to make the time doing so well spent). What do you have in mind for "good marketing"? As for a new make over, there's no point in changing the look if there's nothing else to draw people. If more content is added to draw people, why bother changing the whole look (which is no kindergarten drawings as it is)?

I agree with this. I've played a number of MMOs with good graphics and little else. I stopped playing them.

I would certainly like to see some of this : )

I've heard/read many times sentences like "I would try this game, if it has better graphics". So, in terms of promotion, better textures would be beneficial. That could be another way to hook up more players, those who give up early because they weren't pleased with graphics and quit before they advance further in game. Let alone better textures would improve athmosphere and immersion.

As for running Ryzom with updated graphics on crappy PC's i see no issue here. Quality of textures is optional, you can choose it depending on what your machine is capable of. Just add more options to it, like 256 and 512 MB textures, so players could opt for better graphics if their computers can handle it.

All in all, IMO it's not a top thing on developer's To Do list, but definitely would get my thumbs up if implemented.
