Auto usually uses D3D for AMD/ATI cards and OGL for nVidia cards (which should be the best choice in most cases as well) - but this is only true for windows systems since other don't have D3D.

Well, I am on a Windows XP system.

I upgraded my drivers (they were a year old) and had a long session last night.

D3D seemed to give me a little better results than I had before -- for about 15 minutes. Then it was hit and miss, with some pretty nasty misses. Digging and chatting is always dangerous, but digging and suddenly having the keystrokes in the chatbox:

g.....o.........l.....ik.....e.........thi.....s

made for some exciting digs.

Strangely enough, I didn't have the problem while organizing the team to take down Kipuketh.

Now I will set it to OGL and see what that does. So far not so good.

Can you have a look at your network window (Shift-N) and see what the "ping" value is when you are experiencing the problem?

Are you running Windows XP with service pack 3? 

NVidia cards should usually run great with OpenGL, and Ryzom using a lot of CPU is not necessarily a problem. My guess is that there is another process that is interfering somehow. Can you give some information about other processes that are running on your PC?

I'm running Win XP service pack 3 up to date. I just installed the new drivers for NVidia, but to no great effect. The NVidia card is working fine in other applications, such as viewing videos. Forcing OGL seems to have alleviated the problem a little but not completely. In fact it's happening just as I type.

Ping is on the order of 400-500 (and always has been for me). Download ranges from 400-1200 depending on region (and again, it always has). Upload is in the 350 to 500 range. I had checked the values in the Network box because I always have that open.

Other processes running are Firefox (currently 9.0.1) and sometimes Yahoo IM, Ventrilo, and Thunderbird. There appears to be no correlation with what is open, and I used to have all of those open without problems before.

I am running Avast anti-virus, but I was running McAfee when this first started and the change has not made any difference.

The problem is not that "Ryzom is using a lot of CPU" -- the problem is that Ryzom is using *all* the CPU. It just took me 5 seconds to open the task manager and it's set for high priority and Ryzom to Normal.

One thing that I have noted is that my Cache folder fills up very fast. What are the files in the cache folder? Could this be related?

P.S. -- The Login splashscreen for Ryzom interferes with the other processes in the computer... That's not normal (imho).

I can understand your frustration, let's see if we can figure this out.

Please try the following suggestions to see if that helps anything:

1. Have you tried disabling your anti-virus temporarily? Perhaps the anti-virus interferes in some way.
2. Have you tried installing a freshly downloaded copy of Ryzom in a different location? (C:\Ryzom for example) Perhaps there is something in your config, data or save files that causes the problem.

The cache folder is just a copy of images from the in-game browser (forum sig banners, guild logos etc.) and prevents a re-download of all those images every time you browse. I doubt that this is related.

If you read back a ways you will see that I did do a freshly downloaded re-install. While I did not install it to a different location, it was installed to a new C:\Program Files\Ryzom\ directory. (i.e. I moved the old directory to a different location before reinstalling.) Would it really make a difference if it's one layer up?


If the problem is in my files that define my setup and my map (especially my MAP), then I'll live with it. I'm not re-marking all those deposits. :( When I did the reinstall I did not over-write the config or data files, but I did restore my old save files.

I doubt that it's the anti-virus, since the problem has extended over two anti-virus programs and appeared when McAfee was my continuous AV program. I am reluctant to disable the AV for any length of time (for obvious reasons).

Question for you to pass back to the devs: Did the major upgrade change any of the ports that need to be kept open?

Thanks for the info on the cache folder. I do have a lot of screenies in my Ryzom directory. Could those be having any effect?

I have disabled the AV and am launching it. I am not happy at all with the idea of being without my AV.

However that does seem to have removed the interference problem. At least on a short term basis. This is not a good thing, imho.

OK, I just enabled the AV and things immediately returned to the interference with things like typing. WTF??? I checked the priority and both Ryzom and Avast have normal priority.

Thus my report.

Have you tried setting Ryzom to a below normal or low priority? This will improve the behaviour of background applications such as your AV, especially on single core PCs. Ryzom might be running faster on lower priority since it does not need to wait (on full CPU) for the AV to finish scanning data files that long. The taskmanager itself may be running on high priority but the shell launching it doesn't.

You can also check if your AV offers options to exclude all ryzom files from background scanning. Ryzom is not a common application and thus not likely to be subject to virus or trojan attacks.

Not wanting to run without anti-virus is understandable, but it won't hurt for testing purposes (provided you don't do anything else like browse or download)

Could you see if you can reproduce this behaviour consistently? I.e. AV off = running OK, AV on = laggy.

Possibly disable on-access scanning (I think that's what Avast calls it) all together while Ryzom's running? Or like Ulykus suggests just disable it for Ryzom if that's possible. I haven't used Avast since before the GUI change a while ago, so I don't know.

Using Avast myself on a dual quad core machine and not seeing CPU usage above 25%.
You can exclude the Ryzom directory from the Real Time Shields -> Expert Settings dialog.

I did the test with AV on/off/on/off and it displayed the expected behavior -- interference when on, none when off.

Well, I'm on a single-core machine. I have taken the advice of Gorran and excluded the Ryzom directory from Real time shields, and excluded the ryzom client as well.

And if that doesn't work, I'll try the lower priority to see if it paradoxically fixes the problem

OK, did a two hour run with the AV stuff adjusted, and it's a little better, but still not good.

I will now be attempting the setting of Ryzom to a lower priority.

Just a few things i was thinking of... Are you working on a laptop or desktop?
Laptop:
Is it slow when adapter is plugged in or is it when adapter is not plugged in?
This could come of powersaving stuff from Windows/Linux/Mac/Ubuntu/....

Desktop:
Also check your powerplan, maybe you have some C02 reducing stuff in there.
If you have that your PC is clocking your processor down when no need for power.
And switching back that is sometimes a bit of pain in speeds performance.

To Bennassi -- Desktop AMD Athalon 64 3200 2.01 GHz/ 2GM memory and Nvida 9600 GT. The power settings are set to "leave the bloody computer alone, I'll turn it off when I go to bed."

To all. Tried running Ryzom at lower priority, which did remove the interference with Firefox and with the use of text boxes in game, but at the expense of hesitant and jerky movement in game and less responsiveness to changes in my digging operations. I'm not sure I'm going to repeat that. CPU usage was at 100.0% at all times even with the reduced priority.

More ideas?
