What is "overcrafting"?

It sounds like, for example, using q100+ materials when you can only make a q20 dagger.

Or is it something else entirely?

Crafting skills split into many branches, but you skill get the craft action of your highest achieved lvl in that branch. For example if your earring crafting is lvl 190 you can craft q200 earrings. You can use the same q200 action to make anklets even if your anklets are at q150. The difference is overcrafting and gives additional xp because it is more difficult to make q200 if your skill is only lvl 150.

I don't see why you feel the need to have a go at the guy like this. If he has questions, let him ask them where he feels best able to. While you might get instant answers on Uni, you can't refer back to them. When your memory isn't as good then uni isn't useful at all. Please try bearing people's situations in mind before you write such a snarky post again.

Plus, when you post to the forum in game, it posts as whichever alt you are playing at the time.

You can't "complete" the mainland. If one thinks one has seen or done everything there, one is kidding oneself. But be prepared to "get out what you put in," because the mainland does not coddle or hold hands.

Other games - they give you a cookie whether you succeed or not, in fact you don't even have to participate. Ryzom takes your cookie, eats it in front of you, and slaps you 2 or 3 times for bringing a cookie in the first place.

If anything, it goes to show that the game could use a more updated manual... or a more complete Wiki, whichever is easier to create.

For instance, the topic of overcrafting is somewhat covered in the Wiki, but nowhere near completeness. I'm a big fan of telling people to RTFM, but in this case I would not feel entitled to do so.

Said article could be improved by adding this piece of information from the old game forums:

XP = (Q2 / Q1) x (100 + 4(Q1 - L)) x M

Q2= quality of the item that is crafted
Q1= quality that the crafting action is set to, if crafting action is a success
then Q2 = Q1, if the item is degraded then Q2 < Q1
L= your crafting level for that item
M= the number of mats used in the plan

Example:
You are level 134 in sword craft and are trying to make a medium plan q140 sword but it you get a q111 degraded sword.
XP = (111 / 140) x (100 + 4(140 - 134)) x 27 = 2654 xp

Note: 1)The equation is 100% accurate for items that do not degrade but may be off by less than 1% for partial successes due to roundings.

2) When Q2 - L > 50 , you do not get any extra experience. In other words , overcrafting by more than 50 levels caps out the experience at 300 xp per mat.

There, now I could simply answer with a link, or copy/paste the whole contents of the article and call it a day :)

Probably the shortest, simplest description and yet completely accurate.

Overcrafting is why my Bracelets, Heavy Vest, and Staff crafting skills are 50-60 levels higher than any of my other crafting skills in the jewel, armor, and weapon branches. I did it that way so that whenever I craft any jewel other than a bracelet, any armor other than an HA Vest, or any weapon other than a staff, I get the maximum XP possible; up to 300XP per mat used if I am lucky enough to not degrade too much.

Getting nearly triple the XP (on average) saves a lot of time too, mostly since one does a lot less digging for the same number of levels.

I have never been able to understand this idea of using staff to overcraft with; a q10 staff is as good as a q250 staff and xp is by mat not weapon plan.

Yes,, for a while I used staff as my highest weapon skill, the one benefit is that it only requires two material types, bark and fiber. I have since changed to amps as my highest weapon craft. So staff good for lower level diggers...

I can see how the 2 mats would appear to help, BUT you are using it to over craft weapons that have 3-4 mats, so I can't see there being any real gain in the end.

Lacuna - The way I see it, I have a nice, safe spot in Loria to dig grind fiber and bark. Crafting other weapons would require more back-and-forth, and more time editing my dig actions (I use material specializations).

Given how many times I have to swap already, just sticking with two mats to eliminate even the couple of minutes it takes to do so is a bit of a time-saver. There is shell here too though, so I could do Pikes or Spears as well without running around. But the Amber/Node spot is ~400m away from where I currently spend most of my time, and I just don't feel like running back and forth.

One other thing is that Staff crafting at 150 opens access to the racial 1H weapon crafting plans that take the same number of mats as HQ weapons. That will speed up grinding any other 1H crafting skill as well since my other 1H crafting skills are too low to buy the HQ plans. When the time comes to do other weapons, I'll be getting 300XP/mat for a loooong time, which will cut down on digging time per crafting level, and using more mats per item which will also save a bit of time (and tool wear).

Now, for actual use, a q10 staff is just as good for enchants as a q250, and regular HQ gear has a durability advantage over "racial" gear, but for purposes of just grind-crafting, shorter dig times and maximum number of mats per item when I switch to another craft skill are why I am taking the route that I am taking.

Does it make more sense now?

All you arguments are voided if u use hawkers, and or just dig one mat at time, if you are worried about the 2 seconds it takes to change mat specs. Any one hand weapon will work for unlocking mq and hq plans. HQ is really only a matter of skin for staffs. Even then it is a staff and any other 1 hand weapon will unlock this. HP is a moot point with staffs, they are not goign to wear out. OK u can stick enchants on them :s The only real use I can think of them is for a boosted one and shield and +3 parry HA so you stand looking pretty while mobs like kinkoo/vorkoo hit you and you make the healer have an easier time :)

Changing five actions is a hassle though, but if the couple of MINUTES it takes to edit them all allows me to dig a full bag faster then it's an overall time saver... unless I have to do it too often because I'm switching mats that often.

As for HP, I only mention it because I figured someone would point out their inferiority compared to HQ. HP is not a moot point with daggers, spears, pikes, swords, axes or maces, so the equation is a little different... if you plan to use the item. But for just grinding, HQ and racial are equivalent; both use the same number of mats.

If I were willing to take more time and go for dappers or PvP weaponry then I would slow down and do it differently. But my priorities are not the same as your's. My only considerations are XP, time, and effort. Not dappers, not utility, not "interesting", only XP, hours, XP/hour, and not wasting time swapping from one thing to another or running around Atys.

Or is that the part that makes no sense; having different priorities than you?
