I haven't been back long, but this is the 2nd French ONLY event I see. This time there is an NPC named after a CSR and a CSR wrote message is told by it ONLY in French!

This is outrageous! This is an MMO, Open to the whole world. Then Make it fricken International! If you have to keep in 3 languages the DO THAT! Not this is French only and this is French Only etc etc.

There was this Mektoub Race Event was called a "Test" Event said French Only. They said we all will get a go at it later. When is that Later????

I'm soo happy i have not wasted a penny on subscription AGAIN!

Please calm down Fyranna and have a look at the title again, which is called "L'Equipe de CSR recrute!".
So I am not a french speaking professional at all, but I guess you could get it by your own what it means :-)

They are looking for new french CSR, because there are too less active ones at the moment.
- CSR for processing tickets
- CSR for handling harassments with other (french and not french) players
- CSR for avoiding cheaters and cleaning them out
- ... and so on

So not an event at all this time.
I can understand you, that some events disappoint the one or other player who cannot speak that main language which is spoken on an event.

The Event Teams trying to manage all these problems, but in fact it is very hard to do that. So they determined to isolate those events in 3 different languages. And here comes the second point: They have "many" french event people, but not french csr people. But we (english and german) have lesser event , but more csr people. So, please keep in mind that all of these are volunteers and just still humans :-)
To make a change, you maybe could think about to apply being event people for getting more english events and maybe better ones as well

Hello,

This NPC doesn't announce an event at all: it's only linked to an OOC text of recruitement for french CSRs, that's the reason why it's only written in French.

perhaps a english translation would be good, to keep questions and doubts and stop issues with the language barrier, google translate isn't the best in the world, but even if it's not 100% exact, 60% is better then none, best to show an attempt.

and i understand that it's for seeking french csr's, and that's fine, but i too clicked and was like "WTF" because i can't read that, if there was just a small line telling what it was about, that would be enough to keep everyone that doesn't speak and read french from ranting that it's "french" only.

just my two dappers, but i'm looking for a way to try to quell issues related to the language barrier. (and honestly the players will respect any attempt made to explain to everyone in each language.)

yup we did our first of many events as cookies we atleast used a google translate to try and show everyone is welcome. During then event we did the same it's a bit for extra work and i'm sure not everything is translated coretly but still ppl understood if you use simple sentences and all went nice we got english/german/french there and no disscussions where happening.
So why can't the csr/dev/yummorh himself use a simple google translate to give us an idea about the stuff?

Actually why does it have to be an npc with that anyway? Why can't it be posted as an announcement on the forums for french only to read? All this npc is doing again is makeing the divide bigger again. (my 3cents if you are looking for a csr you would imagine you look for a person that already is using forums and stuff anyway so don't tell me you looking for somebody this way because ppl don't read forums, how can you find a good csr if he hasn't taken the time yet to read some stuff on forums or atleast checks the forum announcements)

ps. fyranna's 'rant' was about more then that event npc

Edit: I see that I was confused a little bit. It is the statue of Yumeroh (in Fairhaven at least) that has the announcement linked to it. (A fact that I didn't even realize for most of an hour. I just figured he was /afk.) However, I have not changed the text below since I feel it is still largely relevant.

Uh...Guys...

Tamarea is NOT an NPC. She's the "communications manager" for Ryzom, which means that she repeats what others tell her to post (not unlike Lt. Uhura in the original Star Trek).

If the point of the posting was to recruit FR NPC's, it's natural that it be in FR. There was a call for English-speaking Event Team members some time ago. It was written in English.

I took the announcement header and put it into Google -- it comes out: "The CSR Team is recruiting!" That is unequivocally clear about what was going on. Google is usually better with simple declarative sentences and doesn't do as well with compound/complex sentences.

International means that we who do not speak FR, DE, ES, RU need to make a little effort as well. Talkirc has done this, and so have I. (For my postings in the Event thread on the Observation camps, however, I recruited a DE and an FR translator, just to be sure that the results were better than Goo-traduction.) ((And yes, I find it amusing that Google starts with Goo ... a well known corruption.))

Fyranna... There was a DE-only event a short while ago, too. And all the local meetings of assemblies are mono-lingual (and the Spanish and Russians and Japanese and Thai players don't get any...).

One thing we should realize is that EN is the default "universal language" because more people have it as either a first *or* second language than any other language in the European language base. That means that those of us with it as a *first* language have an advantage. (I've even seen FR and DE players communicating using EN because they didn't have their respective languages as second languages. It's a process with a lot of error built in, but it's better than no communication at all. (For a counter-argument see Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy entry under "Babel Fish.") )

I use Goo-trad a lot. It may not be perfect but it's not totally bad. The devs are working towards having a universal set of forums with translate buttons. However if you as an EN user change the language for your Forum, you will see a [Translate] button above each post. It uses Goo-trad, but I've more than once been able to see what's going on in a "foreign" Forum.

So -- internationalism is not just the business of the event team and CSRs, it is all of our business.

Bittty -- Still not a CSR

I saw a recruitment signpost a few months ago already - so they changed it to NPC now?

Back then I saw the FR text and was irritated by it but understood the gist that they're recruiting CSR and thus irritated because of an entirely different reason in addition to that:
- It's always said "do NOT mix RL and IC" - a NPC or sign post is clearly IC though and that's used to recruit CSR which is a strict RL thing (event team would be another note though depending on how it's written)
- It's french only inside the game, no google translate available and even though I was able to get the gist of it not every non french native speaker will be able to do the same and using any translation tool for some text bubble in the game is VERY hard (nobody would complain about it on the french forums)

Now something constructive after the rant above:

Do recruitment posts on the webig home page
- even those people not reading the forums will open that page once in a while
- can be translated to the display language
Translate to other languages but clearly note that French is a needed skill
- There are people really good at French preferring other languages for daily communication/interface though (eg. I've set the interface to English instead of my native language German)
Reserve NPCs and signposts for IG/IC-things
- prevents confusion of people thinking it might be a mission or event announcement

I think that your behaviour is outrageous.
The race was made by a French player.
The firts race was just a test with few other French players to make sure that everything is OK before translating the rules in English and doing the event with everybody.
It was explained by this player, in English :
"Misugi"
// This is a test event with the French community only, before opening it to the others.
// It is easier for me to explain things and after this test, I will work out details to give you all a nice event.
// I hope you will understand :)
Maybe I shoudn't speak in behalf of Misugi, but I find it really unfair the way you complain about a player who is willing to do an international event but needs to make a test in French first.

Did you try to create your own event, Fyranna ? If you've done it you must know that it is a lot of work to create an event in your native language. So it's even more difficult to translate it in another language. Give him some time and don't be rude because his not fast enough to translate his event.
He's just a player like you.

This is true this MMO is open to the whole world. So please open your mind too.

kalean,

fyranna is a cookie, and i'd like to state that we cookies do ALL of our events in every major language spoken, french, english, and german, we do not "test" in one language, and do not post about "test's" those are done without advertisement prior to the event.

so as cookies we know how hard it is to translate into more then one language, we do it durring the events we host, we use google translate to do it, it's not perfect but we don't exclude anyone based on language at any stage that is publicly announced, though our planning stages are done only in english, the rest of the player base has no idea what we're planning or working on, until we are ready to let everyone outside of cookies know about it.

testing, planning, and things of that type should be done without forum posts or any other forum of in-game notice until the event is ready for everyone of every language. (which is much the same way the offical event team does things)

sure Fyranna can be very blunt and have passion in what they think is right, and that's Fyranna's choice, but the over-all point being made is that as a international game, there needs to be something done for in-game translation, the lack of it does indeed cause issues. as i've already stated, other games already have features like this in place. that should be very high on the dev roadmap to get translations in game.

just a few more dappers from me :)

(please note i'm just stating my point of view, not trying to say anyone's right or wrong)

So cookies work as a team, right ? I guess you can help each other to test an event before it is finally launched. As a team you may obey your own rules.
AFAIK Misugi is not part of any team and he creates his events alone. So he asked for help publicly. Maybe he shouldn't have post in the event section... I don't know.
What I know is that through the years Misugi have done a lot of nice events (especially tournaments) on Aniro the French server. He's not working the way cookies work, maybe. But he always puts a lot of efforts to entertain other players.

So I hope you will enjoy his future events in English.

I believe every community/group should be able to organize its own events in its own language, without the overhead of translating. We already have a translation overhead at assemblies, and the general consensus is that meetings are made more boring because of the extra time added.

Just my 3 cents.
