Just the name and symbol? The days-since-creation counter and the member list are more important and if the name and symbol could be kept I don't see why the other data couldn't be kept as well.

this would allow a preservation of the guild name and symbol by those who choose to keep them; however, it would also give many an opportunity for a fresh start

edit: meaning the guild would be recreated

Can't see the point in doing this on a character-by character basis. Most of the established guilds will be re-established after the wipe and I imagine all of those will keep the guild icon as it is.
