Wait, so let me get this straight. You post the words 'Free To Play' on your front page, but then I see that this 'freedom' is for a mere 21 days? Am I misunderstanding things? I'm really getting sick of seeing what amounts to a DEMO PERIOD being advertised as FREE TO PLAY- Microsoft did it with Flight, Blizzard is doing it with WoW, and now I'm seeing it here. This is deceptive and wrong, and I don't appreciate advertising that assumes its audience is stupid.

#2 Report | Quote[en]

You can play for free upto lvl125 for as long as you want...

#3 Report | Quote[en]

Where did you find that info about 21 days? It's outdated and should be replaced by the actual limitations of free to play accounts.

As Soularis said, you can play 'free to play' toons as long as u want. you will be limited to lvl 125 (subbed accounts can go up to 250). you will also be limited in storage capacity (ftp: 600, sub: 4100 + guild storage). 125 levels and 600 storage is fine to get months of truely free fun. if you don't play much, it can be more.

I generally agree with you. if some product is advertised as free, there should be no limitations, no itemshop, no sub. But if you compare the number of truely free games to the number of games advertised as free to play, you will find ftp is a phrase used by many commercial games. Ryzom as a small niche game does not define that kind of standards, it just uses it.

Mmk, the torrent page here needs to be updated-

Just an oversight, but had me spooked for a bit.

With that out of the way, I may give this a try after all. 125 levels should keep me busy for a while, and 600 storage slots is a lot more than even Champs Online or LOTRO, and shouldn't restrict my packrat tendencies too much.

#5 Report | Quote[en]

Um... that's 600 bulk -- not slots. If you harvest a lot of mats you'll find that you bulk up quite amazingly. Luckily there are workarounds, but for true packrats (*bows*) there is never enough storage.

125 levels *will* keep you busy for a while, especially since that's 125 levels each in 40-odd skills. (rough estimate -- some of the skills branch above the 125 level).

Hmm..... I gotta say, I agree with the original poster. I play a lot of games and "free" is NOT "free to try" regardless of how many levels you have access to. It is misleading and false advertising.

And 600 bulk? What the heck? That's not so great either. Especially for 125 levels. (And when you are a pack rat like me.) ;)

Luckily, I knew the "free to try" was fake before I came here. My daughter just tried this game and asked me to check it out which is why I am here.

I am amazed at people who, no matter how much you give them for free, are still upset that they are not getting even more for free.

And sorry, but I do not know what games you play, but free to play almost always implies limitations of some kind. That is the whole business model behind free to play. Get people to pay.

The only difference between Ryzom and a lot of true F2P games is that Ryzom doesn't trick you into thousands of micro payments, which often accumulate to more than a monthly fee would cost, that give any paying customer subtle but obvious advantages. Ryzom is clearly stating the limits of free accounts and doesn't suggest a false equality between free and paying customers. And paying in Ryzom doesn't help you advance faster, or be better than others with less work.

And finally, you might want to check out the Concept section of the Wikipedia entry of Free-to-play, especially the very first sentence.

Cheers

For your daughter's sake I hope she learned her logic elsewhere.

Amen. I wrote it once in uni but I gladly repeat it here, personally I think Ryzom offers alot for free. You are able to explore all areas without time limit and aquire half of all skills. I see a subscription more of a donation, if you like this game and want to support the developers, you subscribe.

Somebody has to pay for the servers/devs/...
Nothing is free in the real world, ppl need to get payed for their work. I never heard about a free painter or a free supermarket either.
Oh and ryzom is opensource so in theory it's one of the most free games around, you could infact build your own client/server and play on there.

Well, to be fair there, he'd also have to design his own world. The content itself is not open sourced, for in my opinion quite obvious reasons.

#12 Report | Quote[en]

true Domin but if he doesn't want to pay a painter he has to buy his own brushes and paint and then paint himself, or when he doesn't want to buy a bread from the backery he has to buy his own oven and stuff to make bread. In the case of Ryzom he gets the tools (oven/brushes) for free but still has to do the workof making it in a playable game himself.

my feeling ryzom is super cheap entertainment no matter how promoted.

#14 Report | Quote[en]

Its $100 a year. Most people pay more than that each month on their cable bill.

Go Sub!

That's sad...

Anyway, not everyone is able to get away with $100 a year for Ryzom. If you tried the PayByCash method and chose Western Union it would get to something like $300 a year (don't forget the commissions the WU agent will add on top of what PayByCash shows!). And then that's the amount most people can only spend for a yearly vacation (per family member) these days...

I won't be subbing me and my wife, and my kid for a total of $900 yearly, sorry. There are way better things to spend that amount on.

And... Ryzom is perfectly enjoyable on f2p accounts, so it is f2p in a sense. You can be an adequate member of community without paying anything, that's more than most other games offer.
