Almost happened today, too. Had the credit card out on the desk, ready to plug in the numbers because I had such a fantastic experience today. Witnessed a true act of selflessness on the part of another player (and wrote about it) and was absolutely enthralled by an impromptu cage match in Pyr... that I made the mistake of sharing with others on the Universal channel.

Boy, was THAT a mistake.

Seems like every time I open my mouth on that channel, I hear petulant whining from another player about my usage of that channel. I think I've done my due diligence on that part. Asked for clarification on the channel's usage, got it from a bonafide CSR (and in a proper tone, as well - none of the snide commentary I hear from the few players that have given me this kind of grief) and considered the matter closed.

Until today, when a player named "Lucassomethingorother" (I couldn't be bothered to remember the cat's name) decided to cop an attitude about some minor play-by-play of the fight.

I then realized I shouldn't be spending my money where my personality isn't welcome.

That might change. Who knows? It's a fantastic game that, in and of itself, certainly deserves the financial support. But on a personal level, I just can't justify the expense if I'm going to take heat from ordinary players (read: not CSRs that actually have the authority to tell me to pipe down, which I would gladly do if a CSR ever felt the need to tell me - which, to date, ZERO have) over using Universal for anything other than strict Q&A.

And watching some of those same players do exactly what they squawk at me for doing.

Why bother? I can be spending that money on some golf balls at the driving range, or going out to the bar, or any one of a number of other things where I can both enjoy the activity I'm doing AND the company of other like-minded individuals. Which, I apparently assumed incorrectly, I thought was the point of a social game like an MMO.

Oh well. C'est la vie.

So Winch Gate, that's the only reason you've not received my monthly dues yet. And with the free level cap being what it is, I apparently have a lot of time to enjoy the game for free before deciding if it's worth it. Which I feel I am left no choice to do at this stage. It's a great game, and the review I wrote for it says as much. But the more I play, the more I wonder if I rated the playerbase too high with a 10/10.

Yep. A few people can drag down the score that much, unfortunately.

Anyway. I've got things to do, and this is just an FYI. Anyone who wants to complain about my talkative nature is more than welcome to do so here, but frankly, it's not going to carry much weight unless you've got a (CSR) next to your names. (It may, however, earn you some face time in a future short story or review.)

It is what it is. I don't take orders from equals. No one should. And I'm certainly not about to spend hard-earned cash to endure it. Not when I can play for months for free. ;-)

And for those that don't like it?

Ignore me. I'm married, so I'm used to it.

See y'all planetside! Many, MANY more months of free play ahead for this cowboy.

-Warmest regards,

FYI, the current Arispotle policy on universe chat is:
Universe chat is for Ryzom Q and A.

However, some chit-chat is allowed, provided it is Ryzom related, relevant and in English, does not degenerate into a monologue or is dominated by a small group of people. Also, when a player asks for help, unrelated chit-chat may not interfere with any answers, or 'drown out' the question.

I have screen shots showing a straight hour where *you* chatted non-stop with two or three others in Uni during this time.

Of course, no one asks questions in Uni any more because it's become nothing more than the chatter box for a few and the chatter doesn't drown out the questions, it has simply killed them altogether.

Amazing! I must not have answered any questions today, then, though I could have SWORN I did. However, you must know much more than I about it, even though I was present for typing out the answers to these questions that have apparently died off as a result of yours truly. (Never knew I had such power! I should find a way to monetize that.)

Including assisting another player with a quest. Who requested the help on - you guessed it - the Universal channel in between fits of chat.

If you don't like it, fine. But it's not the place of a regular player to give another player orders. I believe those problems should be forwarded to the CSR staff, if I'm not mistaken, and THEY handle the issuing of orders. Those ARE the rules, are they not?

You can TRY to tell me to shut up. I don't know where you're from, but here in America people do that to other people all the time. We just don't listen to 'em unless they have a badge. ;-) So, don't be surprised if I just laugh it off and keep being me.

File a complaint if you want. Ignore me if you like. I'm truly unconcerned about it until a CSR is. But there is a certain entertainment in watching a small handful of people become so hand-wringingly upset about it. Imagine if we were all like that about, say, getting cancer cured. Probably have it done by now.

Anyway, do what you like. I'll continue to be me until an individual with the authority to tell me not to be does so. And then I'll probably just find another game or go back to the one I was playing. There's no graphics, but there's also none of this nonsense either. Gotta take the good with the bad, I guess.

Thanks for your comments. :-)

(Interestingly enough, the CSR you quote is one of the more animated - and, dare I say, fun - individuals that chats on Universal. Sywindt was one of the specific CSRs I had in mind when giving the staff overall such a high score JUST BECAUSE of his ability to balance chat with helpful answers. Irony, eh? Good stuff.)

All I can say is that you clearly are not on at the same time I am. I see lots of questions in Uni, and lots of chatter, usually from a small group of people, who nonetheless manage to answer questions while continuing to chatter. I also see lots of time when there is no action at all -- hours of no action at all.

As Dainan points out, if you think the rules are being broken, the appropriate action is to take a screenie and file a ticket. You could also go on CeB and ask a CSR to look in and monitor the situation. That's what CSR's are for. If there is an actual rules violation in the opinion of the CSR you will see a sudden lack of talk from an individual as the CSR turns on the MUTE switch.

I agree that we should watch out for the health of the common area, but there are ways to do it that don't involve turning the Uni channel into a disputation.

We all know I'm pretty much a stickler for keeping Universe channel productive for what it was made for. There's no doubt about that and it has made a lot of people mad at me, but there are a ton of people who appreciate that I am constantly watching uni and making sure that things don't get too out of hand. They thank me when I do so and that keeps me doing it when people try to stop me.

In fact, as of late I've stopped trying to constantly push uni back to it's purpose because of all the hate I've been getting. It's just increasing. But when I see something that might lead to a fight or completely doesn't belong there or doesn't even have anything to do with atys yes I will push it back or bug the heck out of somebody while trying.

Now about yesterday and you commentating on a PvP battle that was going on (or something). That did NOT belong in uni. For one it was you dominating the chat solely and quite a few people don't care about PvP. A large chunk probably didn't even care what was going on there.

Yes I could take this to the CSR but I don't see that as necessary. Players should respect each other. It's not like people are telling you "Shut up" They are asking nicely. The thing that has always been nice about our server is that we are a mature group and can handle things ourselves most the time without having to get an authority involved.

I know you may not care what I think. You've made that rather clear Dainan and I'm not sure if I'm on your iggy list still or not (If so then not sure how my answering your questions got through well...) but I don't speak for only me. New players look to uni for help in learning the game.

There's never been much of an issue with the way uni works until now...

You say there are a few people dragging down the scene for you? Well ever think that the way you want things and your disregard for other's requests might be dragging down the scene for others?

The reason people we're telling you Ryzom Q&A the whole time simply, is because you we're spamming peoples chat, many people have active chats (Guild/Kami/Kara ect.) And when theres lines of you commentating a duel for 15 minutes it can get irritating.

Personally I love it how Meagon try's to keep Universe chat for what it is used for, but Im sick of people always being rude to her about it.

Conversely, I'm just as bored with being chided about it by regular players. It carries absolutely no weight, and I find it just as disrespectful as a result. This "Meagon" person, like any other person without a CSR account that whines about "misuse" of a universal channel, is being just as rude in overstepping their bounds in my eyes.

But I wrote about it and got over it. It is what it is and I'll do what I do. If ya don't like it, you're free to deal with it in any manner you see fit.

Who am I to tell you how to handle things? ;-)

I'm done with the topic, personally. See ya 'round.

Well I got that you are over it but i already got my 2 cents out. So i'll put them here anyway.

I actually agree with both sides. Sometimes there is way to much chit-chat in uni that often gets some unfriedly mood. Both isn't good because this is what makes good people disable uni. The bad mood type even might scare off new players. Since we cannot have CSR around 24/7, it's very good we have several players who watch over it and try to calm down the discussion when necessary. Ryzom is no large city where you call police if the neighbor next house has a loud party at 2 am. It's a small village where you go and and talk to him.

There are other times, when there is some friedly short conversation and someone jumps in with a 'stick to Q&A' or similar message. Or when someone asks for some fellow spanish or russian speaking players (at least in spanish i can guess what it is about if there is some 'espanol' in first question). Most of the time someone will jump in on that too, reminding everyone to stick to english in uni. That's what i actually dislike. We did open Arispotle to those players (meaning noone complained when the plan came up) and we should at least make them feel welcome here now. Doesn't mean to allow lengthy discussion in non-english languages but allowing them to ask for fellow players in their native language. If we don't there is no point in these two new translations.

So... in short: I like people looking after uni chat and trying to calm heated discussions down. But please let everyone at least make a few statements, be it english, spanish or russian. This actually helps new players to get the impression of a living community and feel welcome.

And as a sidenote: in my opinion most spam in uni is those lengthy and pointless 'hi xyz' rituals done by some of those who 5 minutes later will tell others to stick to Q&A. I don't mind saying hi on uni... but telling anybody to stick to Q&A after doing a 5-10 lines hello ritual is somewhat funny.

Yes funny as most of these people ought to have established communication channels with their fanbase outside Uni. People that do care you logged in will get notification about it. Personally I minded duel commentary far less than lines and lines of hugs, kisses and loves.

Very well said -- This is pretty much the exact reasoning behind the current policy.

For completeness: Everybody has the right to (politely) point out that somebody is breaking the rules. In fact -- we expect you to! Saying that you will only listen to a CSR when you are breaking the rules is nothing more than misguided.

My problem is a I see a definite double standard. Seems many vets allow older players to talk in uni but Jena forbid if a newer player does. Happened to me the other day as myself chatting was ok in uni(I know I sometimes abuse it. I logged in an alt I rarely play and was told to shut up pdq.-Kil

The key word, sir, is *politely*. You did so today, and I complied.

I can't say the same for some others. But I can't hear 'em anymore, so it's all good as far as I'm concerned.

But for the record, no, I don't take orders from equals. Never have. Never will. :-)

I don't mind chatting away in /u, or anywhere else, as long as it doesn't turn into drama. But as everyone else says (or should say), questions first, fun second.

Dainan, I am sorry that your not enjoying the game enough to subsribe. With that said you shouldn't let something like this hold you back from supporting such an amazing game. This game should be about you, your friends and guild (I see your in BM so you have a great bunch of people on your side). Now when it comes to uni you do get a warning message saying it is for Q & A and since thats what its for you can't fault people for trying to direct it back to Q & A NICELY. If you do want to carry on conversations you have the options to send a tell or maybe even starting your own channel and inviting people there. Please don't let something like this discourage you from being you, but do so trying to be within the rules.

Something like the one I just typed, to be precise.
