The Occupation's Stories

Occupation Masters
Hello again homins, thank you for joining us on our very last instalment!

Last time, we looked at the occupation products. This time, we'll be taking an in-depth look at the occupation masters; the 8 extraordinary homins who each in their own way led their occupation out of the shadows and into greatness!

Most of them are far too busy with their occupations to give interviews, so to tell us something about them, I've invited the biggest gossiper I could find; a Matis from the lower nobility! And don't worry, after the complaints we received last time, I instructed this expert to stay objective. Take it away, Matis!

Reka Qe-Wung : Master Cartographer
As a young Zorai girl, Reka Qe-Wung was a disciple of Fung-Tun. She first learned magnetic cartography from him, though she soon surpassed her master. It was also Fung-Tun who gave Reka her position as head of the Magnetic Cartographers guild. So after Fung-Tun made his mad power-grab and was deposed, Reka stood trial for her role as his student. But she managed to convince the court that her work had only ever been scientific, and that she cared not for politics. And so she managed to retain her position. She does indeed seem to be a woman who is completely devoted to her research.

Kia Bo-boo : Master Medic
Kia Bo-boo is best described as an eccentric genius, and is a controversial figure in Zora. He was part of the group of scientists that found the link between magic use and Goo. After that, this group of scientists pleaded for less magic use, and once the Medic amber cube was discovered, they banded together to revive the occupation. They chose Kia as their representative because he was the most knowledgeable amongst them, which only goes to show scientists know nothing about PR. Though Kia is a fervent Kami follower, he is sometimes accused of demonizing the Kami's magic. He is also a practising nudist, which doesn't help make him less controversial.

Be'Sheppy Ezzy : Master Water-Carrier
Ba'Shappy Ezzy is like a walking billboard, a Tryker success story of the kind the Water Company wants you to hear. A Tryker who worked himself up from a simple job carrying buckets of water around, to being one of the managers of the Water Company. Even after he became a manager, Ba'Shappy was not afraid of menial labour, and frequently worked together with the workers under him, rather than only directing them as most managers do. This made him popular with the employees. It's for these reasons that he was chosen as the public face of the Water Company. See, now those guys know their PR!

Alin Ba'Creusey : Master Larvester
Alin Ba'Creusey has managed to become something of a legend amongst the Tryker, she is said to be the very best sneaker in the world. That's not exactly deserved though, you see, the larvesters are a secretive bunch by nature, and Alin was chosen as their spokesperson because she was the most sociable amongst them. So she's not actually better at sneaking than the other larvesters, nor is she really the leader of that anarchistic bunch, but her position as spokeswoman for a secretive group simply makes her easy to idolize. She's supremely confident and a good talker too, which also helps.

Zemolion Aeros : Master Toolmaker
Zemolion Aeros started out as an ambitious young Fyros girl who worked as one of the many apprentice smiths in the Forge. After witnessing several injustices there, she took it upon herself to take on the powerful Zessen family. It cost Zemolion her job and much more, but she became their most vocal critic, though there are actually rumours that she's in a secret romance with one of the younger Zessens. The Senate chose her as Master Toolmaker to conclusively disprove the rumours that they were taking bribes from the Zessens. She is fiercely headstrong and individualistic, she even dresses... let's call it 'rebellious'.

Dex Arbhor : Master Butcher
Dex Arbhor was a humble Fyros butcher from the lower class, and proud of it. Hard-working, dutiful, honest, jovial, he was very good at his job but his background and lack of ambition prevented him from moving up. It was pure chance that Dex happened to be the butcher who the larvesters first approached with their kitinlair cattle. But it was his skill that's had him unexpectedly manage to stay on top of the new Butcher occupation, to the surprise of those who mistake his lack of sophistication for lack of intelligence. It's largely due to his influence that the butchers are staying simple and not giving in to what he considers 'decadence'.

Valentina Sinti : Master Florist
Floristry is in the Sinti blood, it was Valentina's grandmother who pushed for floristry to be merged with botany. And though the position of Master Florist disappeared after that, it was still unofficially carried on from mother to daughter. Valentina lost faith in the merger after she was passed over for the position of assistant to the Royal Botanist, in favour of a woman who was far less skilled but more subservient. So Valentina and her florists set out on their own again. She's harsh, but also a social revolutionary, who believes that the Florist occupation should be open to homins of any gender, race, or social stance. All that counts to her is hard work and the will to prove yourself.

Libri Velini : Master Scrollmaker
This guy is just so mysterious. Libri Velini just showed up one day, showed the King he possessed the long lost scrollmaker skills, got himself officially proclaimed Master Scollmaker and set up business. He claims that he lived with his family in exile his entire life, and that he learned the occupation from his grandfather who was perhaps the only scrollmaker to survive the Great Swarming. I have my doubts about him though, he's turned down a court position, claims he just wants to teach his craft to as many as possible. What kind of Matis doesn't care for prestige? And what kind of Matis dresses like that? And his face, have you seen his face?

Yes, thank you, that'll be enough. With this we have reached the end of my series on occupations! And as chance would have it, just in time to look forward to the new occupations!

I hope you have all enjoyed the stories. Mayhaps once the new occupations become settled in, I may do a series on them as well. But that would be far in the future and who knows where that future will lead me? For now I say: Farewell homins, enjoy your occupations and don't forget there are many stories behind them!
