Hmm where do I start.
Once you come to the mainland don't look at the quests, yes you can do them but they are not important at all.
Mainland ryzom is not quest driven, the quests are just there for entertainment, fame related stuff, and some rites about the lore. You won't really be leveling from doing them.
About being bad in crafting:
I never digged myself so I never crafted either (but have multiple melee and ele masters), in ryzom you are what you have in your hands (the char creation is just for show, only difference is startout weapon). I mean if you don't like doing it don't do it equip a sword and kill some mobs instead, or amps, or ...
About leaving silan:
Alot off ppl say you should stay days, some even weeks there, but I left silan within my first hour of playing (yes I know how the game mechanics worked from beta) but what I'm trying to say here is that it's perfectly possible to survive Ryzom with a lvl 1 char. (you won't have the quest based lvling from silan but you can start directly with the grind), I would advise you to look for an active guild so they can help you out with weapons/armor (the npc stuff is bad) and cats (they give you double xp).
Don't look at it like a mistake but try to learn to know ppl talk with them, make some friends and look if you can join their guild (don't have to join the first guild you see, alot off ppl giving out free gear to ppl that aren't in a guild)
