Welcome, Ramsay :-)
If you like sandbox games, you'll get on well with Ryzom. You will find that there is a community here ready to help and give advice to newcomers like yourself. You have already found these forums which is a good place to go to ask questions (and get answers) and you will find that people in-game will be helpful too.
You will find that you can be anything you want be on Ryzom, so even if you start out as a fighter (as many do), you can also train up your magic abilities, or crafting and foraging. You can make your own armour and weapons from stuff you have gathered yourself. It is entirely possible to become a master in all disciplines (eventually).
You will learn that you can modify your spells, fighting actions etc. to suit the way you want to play in different situations.
Soon you will find that people in-game will be asking for your help, too and that teamwork and friendship is the core of this game.
Have fun and I look forward to seeing you around.
