As for the Kami & Karavan faction... well, Kami will tell you negative things about the Karavan faction, Karavan will tell you negative things about the Kami faction, and in truth most people have only been in one faction anyways and base their opinion of the other completely on rumours. You happened to run into a Kami propagandist, had you ran into a Karavan one you would've heard the exact opposite, how the Karavan faction are a rather friendly community and the Kami only seem nice at first.
Base your choice of faction on which you like more from a lore standpoint, or on which your friends are in. Don't listen to anyone claiming one faction or the other has better/nicer/friendlier people, it's all subjective at best and propaganda at worst.
