I think the range fight aspect to ryzom is way too simple / boring. Having only guns with relatively low DPS (compared to other weps) is pretty discouraging and so atm the only practical use for range fighting is getting skill points to use mostly in other skills; at least for me.
I'd would be awesome if range fighters could at least compete with others of the same level, but the disadvantage atm is too much. There needs to be more special attacks for range fighting only, besides hit rate. For example a 3 bullet burst, a super accurate sniper shot, etc. The balance for those of course would mirror other skills in using more resources to do special actions. (Perhaps they'd have to adjust the weight on guns to increase their basic resource cost.
Another that could be done to make ranging no longer obsolete could be archery. Imagine actually being able to fairly fight an equally skilled player of the opposite skill type (melee / range). It would make for a much more dynamic gameplay too, in both PvP and PvE.
