Tackling points in reverse, it's very possible to have multiple millions in dappers before leaving Silan, just by doing the quests, selling your crafted results and any loot you don't want to use for crafting, and not buying every single item from the shops there the moment you can equip it. The important items you will actually get for free, from the quest-givers. If you do all of Chaing's quests, you'll even get a rather nice set of armour.
Low level players are also not bound anywhere. Some places are just not safe. What may be an impassable wall of aggro right now could change in a few minutes, or next season. Or another path could open itself up. In the majority of cases, your ability to go where you want to go depends on you, your abilities as a person in real life to be patient and cunning and to watch for patterns and cycles in aggro behaviour.
Portals in the cities really don't fit in the theme of the game. I strongly suspect portals wouldn't be used between zones if the developers could work it that way. There are Karavan and Kami altars in the cities which may allow you to use their services for a teleport, but that's it.
And finally, on treks, EVERY heal is appreciated. In fact, if you're not close to master melee or elemental, most of the time you will be specifically asked to heal. Kilgoretrout said it best on BM's last trek: a 1 hp heal could mean the difference between life and death. If the person leading the trek is competent and the people on the trek are good at following instructions and observing, there is actually minimal fighting and much less dying.
When on treks, it's also very important to pay attention to what's around you. You may find that you want to come back to a particular spot later in your Ryzom life. But don't feel bad. Everyone playing the game had to go through a trek at least once in their life. Some of us enjoy doing it more regularly.
