I don't think taking real life example is relevant in this discussion.
Ryzom is a factional game, why faction should be mixed (right now, it's the case, and it has killed a big interest in the game ... now people wants also nation to be mixed which is also killing a lot of plots -> because you know, the game is not only about killing mobs to grind your fighting skills and digging to grind your crafting skills).
So yes, in my opinion (I have already said it somewhere in the forum) gameplay limitation, such as not being able to guild someone not align with the guild, are needed ... just to give some directions to players.
