IDEAS FOR RYZOM

Suggestions for Ryzom.. if I can..

I'm with Magez. Lore is good to have, but being slavishly close to it eliminates much (if not all) of the freedom that defines a sandbox, and (for me) reduces the appeal of Ryzom. I also think that the "lore slave versus freeform" debate is causing a lot of friction on Atys. We're seeing a little bit of that here in this thread; a split between the RPG and RPG camps.

My take is that Atys is a world, worlds are supposed to be dynamic, being dynamic means change, and change means that things won't always be the way they were in the past. Conversely, most interpretations of "lore friendly" I've seen are all about repeating the past "faithfully", being afraid of (if not outright hostile to) change, resisting anything dynamic enough to make an interesting world, and just generally a total buzzkill.

I think the matter should be decided by what is better for the game as a whole rather than what is most lore-friendly; we should respect the lore, but not remain such slaves to it that the game stagnates to satisfy the hidebound. One side or the other will be unhappy no matter which way it goes, but I'd rather the side that represents the majority of Atysian residents get their way than have it decided solely by how closely an idea adheres to the "correct", strict, fundamentalist interpretation of "holy" scripture.

As for whether this particular idea is good or bad, the devil is in the details. I don't oppose it on general principle, and am somewhat intrigued, but I'd want the idea fleshed out a little more before I actually supported it.

Do not assume that you speak for all just because you are the loudest voice; there are many who disagree that simply have no desire to waste words on you.
