Nutsy (atys)
Changing affinity has a dramatic effect on my Intel i3 processor. If I let Ryzom run only on one core (default setting), the game is sluggish at best, and almost unplayable if there are multiple visual effects - winter snow, people casting at an npc fight or outpost, etc. It can easily degrade to 10fps or less. There is no known method to spread only one instance over multiple cores. I don't have problems with processor affinity in general, I'm also running Ryzom only once at a time.
However, if I use Task Manager and set the game to run on all cores (2 normal + 2 virtualized), then I can get 30+ fps with details on medium. Graphics card is an Nvidia GT 630. And I have heard similar accounts from guildmates that are trying Windows, once they change affinity to all cores, performance improves drastically.
Anyway, this was just a side-note, I have no help regarding the problem of Ryzom freezing. It affects some Mac users too..
