A homin just reminded me that this topic was useful to at least a few people :)
so I figure I might as well give it an update. Just a few random things:
1. Underspring, along with the other level 250 Prime Roots regions, are swarming with kitin patrols (kirosta group that only attacks homins).
Considering their aggro range (65m), I would never recommend someone to trek Jungle <--> Desert via Underspring. It is probably still doable, but the odds are awful. If you die on the Outback Ramp there are still chances to get a resurrection, but in PR I can't think of 3 players who would risk coming.
2. Winter is generally the worst season to travel. Lots of carnivores and kitins seem to breed, and exactly those you don't want on your tail.
For instance, Hidden Source is swarming with kinchers near Sirgio's camp and on the small hills; teams with multiple masters can end up wiped. Similarly, kinchers in Trench of Trials seem to multiply.
Adding insult to injury, during winter the aggros can litter a place wall to wall, giving you no passage.
3a. There are now a few kitin "observation camps" in game, as a response to the kitin invasion event that took place in the meantime.
A few of them are in a trekker's path, and could be used as safe spot to afk / regen. Off the cuff I can think of the one at the end of Hidden Source, as one goes down the path towards Knoll of Dissent. If the Woven Bridles tribe won't protect you, the observation camp will.
3b. Speaking of tribes, might be useful to know which of them like your race and which don't, so you can drop aggros on their guards.
There is a comprehensive tribe list on the Ryzom Wiki, maybe useful to read before heading out.. or just ask Universe.
4. I've tried recording a couple of treks with alts, which sort of re-creates the fragile condition of a beginner.
