+1 to the idea of bringing it back. If it's never been changed, and is different in different regions, then that would explain players varying experiences. I've never seen the zap thing happen (coming up to 3 years playing) and I always assumed it would affect only Kami areas - like if you dig too near a Kami shrine. This would fit the Lore.
