The games future

Indigo --

What other Aristopleists have said. There was lots of combat and there was lots of friendship between players and cooperation where an Outpost wasn't in play.

My opinion is this: First: PvP is NOT and never has been the "core" of Ryzom. The conflict between the Karavan and the Kami is *one* core of Ryzom Roleplay, but Roleplay is not necessarily PvP. Roleplay is not even necessarily about conflict between homins. (For one example, see my continuing postings on the roleplay of Bittty as an aspiring Ranger and scout. Atys herself, the Goo and the Kitins provide plenty of opportunity for conflict and roleplay.)

In real life there are a few extremists for whom religion is cause for PvP. In real life most people will accept the fact that their neighbors are (Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Bhuddist, Wiccan, Zorastrian...) and while they might attempt to convert them they are not going to be going out of their way to murder them. Similarly with nationalities.

In Ryzom the case is a little more extreme. The Outposts, though officially a Guild vs. Guild contest, have become a Faction vs. Faction (and occasionally Nation vs. Nation) contest. With the primacy of the Kami Faction (for whatever reason) there is little contest because there is no current expectation of winning on the part of the Karavan. (If the Karavan and the Marauders could/would cooperate they could possibly change that, but ... roleplay ... gets in the way.)

If you want to see the OP wars heat up, convince a couple of large currently Kami guilds to switch allegiance and become Karavan. If you can do that, I guarantee that the q250 deposits of bark, resin, and oil will display remarkably low Kami tolerance. Roleplay does not enhance competition for OPs; an approximately equal playing field does.

I am not a PvP person, but I have friends who are. I am neither Karavan nor Kami, but I have friends who are. I used to be a Tryker citizen and a Karavan before the merge. I still had the same friends, and they were friends even when we were battling each other over an OP (before the merge I would fight in OP wars, but I still wasn't fond of PvP).

In short, I think you are looking at an associated symptom rather than a cause.
