Ryzom could avoid UAC completely on versions of Windows greater than XP. As far as I can tell the only reason Ryzom asks for administrator access is because it writes into the Program Files folder - if it used the User Data folder then there would be no need at all for a UAC prompt to appear.
It's fairly straightforward to evaluate operating system at runtime and define save locations appropriately - having said that I should now do the right thing and set up a development environment for the Ryzom client code available on SourceForge and demonstrate how straightforward it is to make this change ;)
