Hi Parangea and welcome to the game.
You ask some good questions so I will try to answer them - others may give more information on some points.
- Different types of offensive magic; Different creatures have different strengths and weaknesses against different types of melee weapons as well as different types of magic. There is a list of creatures and their characteristics on www.ryzomnomnom.com For instance Acid works well against most creatures but not Kitin - the ones with a shell (names start with a 'K'). Cold works best against those as you have discovered.
- Finding Missions; Look for NPCs (non player characters) with a scroll icon by their name. These are the ones that give missions.
- PvP in Ryzom; There is PvP in Ryzom but it is no free-for-all. You can only attack other players under certain controlled circumstances.
1) Challenge to a Duel - right click on the player and pick this option from the menu.
2) PvP areas - There are areas where PvP is permitted and you go there at your own risk. On Silan there is a PvP Arena just outside the main camp.
3) OP Battles - on the Mainland only. Organised battles over control of Outposts.
It has to be said that some players are more enthusiastic about PvP than others. Some never participate.
- DR System; this sounds like 'Melee Protection Aura' and 'Magic Protection Aura'. These give you immunity for a limited amount of time, during which you can continue fighting, and there is a wait before they can be reused.
- Healing; Healing counts as Defensive Magic, however you only get XP points for healing someone on the same team as you. You can run around all day healing people and not get any points.
- Gear; There are missions which give excellent gear. On Silan you will be given a particularly useful 2 handed sword and magic amplifiers for completing certain missions. On the Mainland the Sage Missions give weapons, armour and jewels. However most players get their gear from trading, crafting or from their Guild. Many crafters sell huge amounts of gear as they level up crafting. Some will give it away if you ask nicely.
There is plenty of help and information on these forums if you have any other questions, or post more or ask in game. Also good sources of information online are:
