Beginnings:

My earliest memories are of waking up on Silan. I remember nothing before that, apart from darkness and confusion. I know that I will, most probably, never find my family. It is because of this that I have a strong need to help others.

After training I chose to move to Yrkanis in the Forest, homeland of my people. I found that although I can be very self-reliant, I also need to belong. I found friends and made new ones, and after some thought I decided to join a guild.

During my training I had come to have strong convictions about the Brotherhood of all Homins, a feeling that we all need to stand together. It was only later that I realised with some consternation that there were tensions between the peoples. I read as much of the history of our peoples as I could, and came to understand the reasons for the mistrust between Homin peoples.

I had always had the feeling that I should be neutral in any dispute, helpful to all Homins and if possible a bringer of peace and understanding. While researching the guilds I realised that most have taken sides in one way or another. This was anathema to me. I spent some time talking with Homins from the various Guilds in the Forest, especially Phaedreas Tears. Their stance is neutral and their stated aim is to help new arrivals - it seemed a close fit with my own convictions. Talking to others, however, made me think in different terms. I am Matis and proud of it. I wanted to explore my heritage and if possible use my research to uncover new truths that would bring the peoples together. I would still help others without favour or obligation.

I began to enjoy the company of the Homins from Cara Via and there I found my home. I have found friendship and honour, and a sense of belonging to something. A family in all but name.

Reflection:

Arfur sat and watched the sunset over Muse Watch Lake.  It was one of his favourite places on all of Atys.  He poked the campfire and watched as the sparks rose up towards the Upper Branches.  He smiled to himself as he thought what Loracas might say.

It had been many Atys Cycles since he had seen his Guild Leader and friend or even Dazzie.  The three of them and been together through the Great Swarming and the defeat of the cities, when Kitin hoards swarmed over the land.  They had gone through the Rainbow Gate together to face an uncertain future.  The rest of his Guild had not been seen again, presumably taking the Final Trek to stand beside Jena.

Until one day he had been digging in the Grove of Confusion and DiHunt had appeared.  This had been a great reunion and Arfur had been happy to see his old friend again.  This shows, he thought, that sometimes homins do return.  You never know who has joined Jena and who is simply on a Long Trek.  He hoped one day to see Shabang, Tico, Lobos, Darchitect, Kushon - any number of lost friends.

Loracas and Dazzie had told him about the journey they were planning to take and it sounded like they would be away a long time.  He knew that they would appear again - after all, they had been there for the Great Egg Hunt this year, a favourite festival for them all.

Arfur grinned to himself again.  They had had many trips together to explore or to dig in the Prime Roots.  Facing danger together with courage and a smile.  They felt safe together and in the end were confident of Jena’s mercy.
Atys is so beautiful he thought.  It is enough to walk the bark alone, surrounded as he was by friends from other guilds, but he missed his guild mates.
