It's not okay. At least experience is not given, or it would be quite sad. In other games, in the case of a similar problem move spavnoe mobs away from the guards, forbid to take loot from units, which at least once hit the guards, etc., but this is not about that.
Guards shouldn't have to work completely for free :)
Have the player lose a bit of reputation every time the guards come to help. Up to the point where reputation is no longer enough and the guards stop helping, letting the player deal with his problems on his own ;)
