Today I tried to change characters on my main account and as soon as I did Quit > Character Selection, the Client totally locked up and had to be re-started.

This is a NEW and very BAD behaviour. Anyone else having this problem????

Yup i have the same problem but it isn't new at all for me , i have that problem since i started to play ryzom (+- 1 year) so yeah i just quit the game and restart it to go to another character :)

I never had that problem until they put in the most recent patch.    That is, before, I used to be able to switch back and forth between numerous toons on the same account with no trouble.

Now, I can log in as one toon, but can only switch once.  If I try to switch a second time, it starts to load then I get the NeL error window and I have to shut down the client and restart it.

Usually happens to me when I have 2 clients open and I try to switch characters on one. Slightly annoying.

By the way, I just did a fresh re-install and patch and the behavior is still the same, which is to say that re-installation didn't fix it. I wouldn't be as concerned except for the fact that even as little as two months ago it was working fine for me. This makes me suspicious that it is a server side problem, NOT client.

On Windows Vista, for the last 2 weeks, i have to wait 30 to 60 seconds after the character selection screen is loaded. If i select a character before that I get an error of XML files missing or deleted, and the client closes, with account still online. Wish they would check/load things BEFORE the selection screen is loaded or character selection is possible.

This should be fixed now, can you please test and confirm or deny?

I don't get disconnected but I see a blank white square in the center when I go into character selection. I don't see this at log in, only when I try to go back into character selection and having already been in world.

Same and this behavior was introduced with patch 1.13 (the latest patch).
